PMS 653 U is a Pantone PMS color specified as a dark blue with a subdued, professional character. Within the Pantone Matching System, it conveys seriousness, stability, and visual restraint rather than brightness or impact.

The color reads as very dark, with an LRV of 9.01. It shows a cool tendency with moderate saturation and a subtle violet-blue undertone that softens its depth.

PMS 653 U works well when a low-key, authoritative blue is needed without strong chromatic emphasis. Its dark value can reduce contrast in low lighting, so viewing conditions and finish choice should be evaluated carefully, especially on large surfaces. Compared to lighter or cleaner blues, it appears heavier and more reserved, which can affect visibility and perceived scale.

Similar colors:

PMS 654 U: slightly lighter, with a more open and less dense appearance.
PMS 655 U: darker and more closed, with increased visual weight.
PMS 2767 U: cooler and more neutral, with reduced blue-violet nuance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 653 U

Can PMS 653 U be cross-referenced to another paint brand color?

No. PMS 653 U is a Pantone PMS color standard, not a paint company color. Most paint brands use their own proprietary palettes, so a direct equivalent is rarely exact.

For brand-facing work, the correct approach is to reproduce PMS 653 U from the Pantone reference itself. This keeps the Pantone standard as the color target rather than attempting an approximate crossover that can shift hue or saturation.

What should I expect for coverage and hide when ordering PMS 653 U paint?

PMS 653 U is a saturated Pantone color, and colors like this often have lower hide than neutral tones. Multiple coats are common to achieve uniform color and visual depth.

Using an appropriate undercoat can help improve consistency and reduce the number of finish coats needed. Planning for test application on your actual substrate is recommended before full production.

Why does licensed reproduction matter for PMS 653 U?

Pantone PMS colors like PMS 653 U are licensed color standards. Licensed reproduction means the color is matched using authorized Pantone references rather than estimated or visual-only approximations.

This is important for brand and marketing applications where consistency across vendors, materials, and locations is required.

Is PMS 653 U a good choice if I need a touch-up-grade color match?

No. Pantone PMS colors, including PMS 653 U, are intended for brand color reproduction, not precision touch-up matching.

If you need a near-invisible match to an existing painted surface, the correct path is to send a physical part or sample for matching. Using the Pantone code alone will not account for aging, substrate differences, or existing finish variables.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 653 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 653 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 653 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How do I convert PMS 653 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 653 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
