PMS 471 U is a Pantone PMS color defined as a dark, earthy brown with a clear orange cast. It conveys warmth, substance, and a grounded visual character within brand-controlled applications.

The color reads as dark, with an LRV of 16.8, and shows a warm, orange-leaning brown tendency. It has moderately high saturation, giving it richness without appearing vivid, and a subtle yellow-orange undertone that can shift under warm lighting.

PMS 471 U works well in brand environments that need depth and warmth rather than brightness. Because of its darker value and saturation, consistent surface preparation and primer selection can help achieve even coverage, and finish and lighting conditions should be evaluated with a physical sample.

Similar colors:

PMS 470 U: slightly darker and more neutral, with less orange warmth.
PMS 472 U: lighter and warmer, with a more open brown appearance.
PMS 471 C: slightly cleaner and more saturated, with increased color clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 471 U

Does PMS 471 U require extra coats to achieve uniform coverage?

PMS 471 U is a saturated Pantone color, and colors in this range can have lower hide than neutral or muted tones.

When applied to light, dark, or mixed substrates, you should expect that additional coats may be needed to reach even color and consistent appearance. This is especially true on raw plastics, primed metals, or patched surfaces.

For brand facing work, plan a test application on the actual substrate and allow for extra material and time so coverage expectations are met before production.

Should I choose a matte or gloss finish for PMS 471 U?

The finish you select will affect how PMS 471 U is perceived in real environments.

Gloss finishes tend to increase visual punch and saturation, which can make the color appear brighter under controlled lighting. Matte finishes reduce glare and reflections, which can be helpful in close viewing or brightly lit spaces.

Consider viewing distance, lighting conditions, and brand guidelines before ordering. If appearance is critical, testing PMS 471 U in both finishes on the final substrate is the safest approach.

What does the U suffix mean in PMS 471 U, and why does it matter when ordering?

The U suffix in PMS 471 U indicates the Pantone reference context used to define the color target. Pantone codes can vary by suffix or series, and those differences can affect the intended match.

Before ordering, confirm that PMS 471 U is the exact reference specified in your brand standards or project documentation. Ordering the wrong Pantone variant can result in a color that does not meet approval expectations.

Pantone PMS codes are communication standards, not paint formulas, so clarity on the correct reference is essential.

Can PMS 471 U be applied to plastic or low surface energy materials?

PMS 471 U can be matched into paint for plastic applications, but plastics vary widely in how well they accept coatings.

Many plastics require specific surface preparation or primers to achieve proper adhesion. Without these steps, even an accurate color match may fail in performance or appearance.

Always test PMS 471 U on the actual plastic material before production, and confirm any primer or prep requirements to avoid unexpected results.

Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. Can I use the Pantone PMS 471 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 471 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
