PMS 442 U is a Pantone PMS color commonly specified as a neutral, cool-leaning green-gray for brand and environmental applications. It conveys a calm, technical, understated vibe with restrained contrast, visual stability, and low visual noise.

The color presents as a mid-light tone with an LRV of 49.9 and reads cool overall with a subtle blue-green tendency. It shows low saturation and chroma, giving it a muted, neutral appearance, with a soft green undertone that becomes more noticeable under neutral or cool lighting.

PMS 442 U works well in brand environments that require a subdued, controlled color presence rather than high visual impact. Due to its low chroma and mid-range lightness, careful surface preparation and consistent application can help avoid uneven appearance.

Similar colors:
PMS 441 U: slightly darker and more neutral, with reduced green presence.
PMS 443 U: lighter and softer, with a more open gray appearance.
PMS 444 U: darker and cooler, with increased gray depth and less warmth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 442 U

What safety and VOC expectations should I have when ordering paint matched to Pantone PMS 442 U?

Paint matched to Pantone PMS 442 U follows the safety and VOC characteristics of the specific product you choose, not the Pantone color standard itself. Different paint types and formats can vary significantly in VOC content, handling requirements, and ventilation needs.

Before use, review the Safety Data Sheet for the exact product you order and follow all application and ventilation guidance. This is especially important for indoor use, temporary installations, or fast-turn marketing projects where drying time and odor may matter.

When is a standard Pantone PMS 442 U match the right choice for my project?

A standard Pantone PMS 442 U match is appropriate when the Pantone reference is the defined color target, such as for branded displays, signage, exhibits, prototypes, and marketing installations. In these cases, visual alignment to the Pantone guide matters more than matching an existing painted surface.

This approach works well for brand-facing components where consistency across vendors and materials is the priority. For large or highly visible projects with formal brand approval, ordering samples first is recommended to confirm appearance under your lighting and substrate conditions.

Will Pantone PMS 442 U look different if I change the paint finish or sheen?

Yes. Even when matched to the same Pantone PMS 442 U color target, different finishes can change how the color is perceived. Glossier finishes tend to appear darker and more saturated, while matte or flat finishes can look lighter and more muted.

Because Pantone guides are a printed reference, comparing them to a painted surface with a different sheen can make the color appear mismatched. For critical brand applications, evaluate samples in the actual finish and lighting where the paint will be used.

How much area does one spray can of Pantone PMS 442 U typically cover?

Coverage per spray can for Pantone PMS 442 U depends on application method, surface texture, and the number of coats required. Smooth, primed surfaces will cover more efficiently than porous or textured ones.

For planning purposes, assume each can covers a limited area and that multiple coats may be needed for uniform color. Ordering extra cans is recommended for multi-part displays or projects where consistent appearance across components is important.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 442 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 442 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 442 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

MyPerfectColor custom spray paint enables you to conveniently achieve a professional spray-smooth finish in any color in any sheen. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 442 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 442 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
