PMS 428 U is a Pantone PMS neutral gray that presents a calm, controlled appearance suited to brand systems and display environments. The overall vibe is clean, restrained, modern, balanced, and professional without drawing attention away from primary brand elements.
The color has a mid-light appearance with an LRV of 56.7. It reads as cool with a subtle blue-gray tendency and remains low in saturation, giving it a soft, muted character rather than a vivid one. A faint cool undertone can become more noticeable under bright or cool lighting conditions.
This color works well as a background or supporting neutral where clarity and legibility of other elements are important. Because it is light and low in chroma, careful surface preparation and even application can help avoid patchiness on porous or high-contrast substrates. Finish and lighting choices can shift the perception between neutral gray and a cooler blue-leaning gray.

PMS 428 U is a Pantone Matching System reference, not a paint formula. Pantone books are printed on paper with a specific surface and ink system, while paint is applied to real substrates with a chosen sheen.
When PMS 428 U is produced as paint, small visual differences can occur due to surface texture, gloss level, application method, and lighting. This is expected and not an error. For brand-critical work, compare a painted sample of PMS 428 U on your actual material under the lighting where it will be installed, rather than relying only on the Pantone book.
Yes. For projects that require brand or stakeholder approval, ordering a sample of PMS 428 U is strongly recommended before committing to larger quantities.
Evaluate the sample on the real substrate and under the installed lighting conditions. This helps confirm that the appearance of PMS 428 U meets expectations and avoids rework if adjustments are needed. Sampling is especially important for high-visibility displays, signage, and multi-part builds.
PMS 428 U defines the color target only. Safety, VOC content, and handling requirements depend on the specific paint product and format you choose.
Always review the Safety Data Sheet for the exact PMS 428 U product you are ordering and follow the listed application, ventilation, and protective equipment guidelines. This ensures safe use and compliance with your internal or site-specific requirements.
When applying PMS 428 U to metal or previously powder-coated surfaces, proper surface preparation is critical. Existing coatings, surface smoothness, and gloss level can all affect the final appearance of the color.
Cleaning and scuffing the surface as appropriate helps achieve consistent adhesion and appearance. Because underlying coatings and finishes can shift how PMS 428 U looks, testing a sample on the actual part is recommended before full production.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

To make spray paint matched to Pantone PMS 428 U. MyPerfectColor uses an acrylic enamel which is a fast-drying durable coating suitable for interior or exterior use. MyPerfectColor custom spray paint enables you to conveniently achieve a professional spray-smooth finish in any color in any sheen. It sticks well to most surfaces including metal, plastics, powder-coatings, cabinets and primed or previously painted wood.
The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 428 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
