PMS 301 U is a Pantone PMS color known for its deep blue appearance and cool overall tone. It presents a grounded, authoritative, and professional visual character suited to brand and display environments.

The color appears very dark, with an LRV of 6.66, and reads distinctly cool. It maintains moderate to high saturation for its depth, with a subtle green-leaning undertone that prevents it from shifting toward violet.

PMS 301 U performs well in applications that need visual depth and contrast without brightness. Careful surface preparation and even application can help achieve uniform results, and lower-sheen finishes may help minimize visible marks under strong lighting.

Similar colors:
PMS 300 U: lighter and brighter, with more apparent blue clarity.
PMS 302 U: darker and more subdued, with reduced saturation.
PMS 2945 U: slightly warmer and more neutral in appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 301 U

Why is Pantone PMS 301 U not recommended as a touch-up color for an existing finish?

Pantone PMS 301 U is a visual color reference, not a coating specification. It does not define sheen, film build, substrate, or application method. Because of that, matching an existing painted surface for touch-up work is unreliable, even if the color name is the same.

Small differences in gloss, texture, and aging will make a Pantone-matched repaint stand out next to an existing finish. PMS 301 U is best used when the Pantone color itself is the target, such as brand-facing displays or components, not when blending into a previously painted surface.

Should PMS 301 U be ordered in matte or gloss for a brand application?

The choice between matte and gloss changes how PMS 301 U is perceived. Gloss finishes increase color punch and saturation but can introduce glare under strong lighting. Matte finishes reduce reflections and can look more controlled up close, but the color may appear slightly less vivid.

Viewing distance and lighting matter. For displays seen from farther away or under even lighting, gloss often delivers stronger visual impact. For close viewing or environments with bright directional lights, matte can be easier to read. The Pantone reference stays the same, but finish affects how closely the result meets visual expectations.

What should I expect for coverage and hide when applying PMS 301 U?

PMS 301 U is a saturated Pantone color, and colors like this often have lower natural hide than neutral tones. That means achieving a uniform appearance may require additional coats, especially over contrasting or uneven substrates.

For best results, apply PMS 301 U over a suitable base color and plan for coverage testing before full production. This helps confirm the number of coats needed to reach consistent color and avoids surprises during installation.

How should surfaces be prepared before applying a PMS 301 U color match?

Start with a clean surface. Remove dust, oils, and residues using an appropriate cleaner, then allow the surface to dry fully. Light scuffing may be helpful on smooth or glossy substrates to improve adhesion, depending on the material.

Always apply a small test area first. This confirms adhesion, coverage behavior, and the visual result of PMS 301 U on your specific substrate before committing to full application.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 301 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 301 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 301 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 301 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 301 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
