PMS 2945 U is a Pantone PMS color identified within the Pantone Matching System as a very dark blue with a serious, authoritative character. It conveys a restrained, corporate, collegiate, and professional vibe with low brightness and high visual weight.

The color appears very dark, with a low Light Reflectance Value of 7.09. It reads as cool and clearly blue, with moderate-to-high saturation for a dark tone and a clean blue undertone. Finish choice can influence perception, with glossier finishes increasing depth and matte finishes appearing flatter.

PMS 2945 U works well in brand-driven environments where dark blues communicate stability and authority. Careful surface preparation and consistent application can help avoid uneven appearance, and lighting conditions may noticeably influence how heavy or flat the color appears.

The following examples reflect commonly cited branding associations and are based on publicly referenced design usage; they are illustrative, not exhaustive or exclusive. PMS 2945 is widely cited as a core brand color associated with Penn State University athletics and identity systems. It is also commonly referenced in branding literature as a dark blue used in institutional and collegiate visual systems.

Similar colors:
PMS 295 U: darker and slightly more neutral, with less blue openness.
PMS 293 U: lighter and brighter, with higher perceived saturation.
PMS 282 U: darker and more subdued, with reduced blue clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 2945 U

Why does PMS 2945 U look different on plastic, metal, and wood?

PMS 2945 U is a Pantone PMS color target, not a material-specific formula. When the same color is applied to different substrates, factors like surface texture, absorption, and reflectivity can change how the color is perceived.

Non-porous materials like metal or plastic often appear deeper or more saturated, while porous substrates like wood can absorb more paint and look flatter or lighter. Sheen and surface preparation also affect appearance. For brand-critical projects, evaluate PMS 2945 U on the actual materials used in the final build.

Where can I find the SDS for paint matched to PMS 2945 U?

The Safety Data Sheet is tied to the specific paint product and chemistry, not the Pantone color code itself. PMS 2945 U defines the color target, but the SDS depends on whether you choose spray paint, epoxy, urethane, or another paint type.

After selecting the product format for your PMS 2945 U order, you can locate the corresponding SDS in the SDS library for that product. This ensures the safety and compliance information matches the actual coating being used.

What durability should I expect from PMS 2945 U spray paint?

Durability for PMS 2945 U spray paint depends on surface preparation, the paint type selected, and the environment where it will be used. Proper cleaning and priming improve adhesion and long-term performance.

Exposure to handling, abrasion, UV light, or outdoor conditions may require a more durable paint system or a compatible clear topcoat. Choose the paint type based on where and how the finished piece will be used rather than relying on the color alone.

When is sampling recommended before ordering PMS 2945 U in quantity?

Sampling is recommended when PMS 2945 U will be used in high-visibility brand applications, large installations, or projects requiring formal brand approval. It is especially important if the color will appear under specific lighting or across multiple materials.

A sample allows you to confirm appearance, coverage, and acceptance on the actual substrate before committing to full production, reducing the risk of rework or brand approval issues.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 2945 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 2945 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Can I use the Pantone PMS 2945 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 2945 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 2945 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
