PMS 276 U is a Pantone PMS color commonly specified in brand and identity standards where a deep, restrained blue is required. Within the Pantone PMS system, it presents a formal, controlled visual character with a subdued, authoritative, corporate, and conservative vibe.

The color appears extremely dark, with an LRV of 1.56. It reads as cool with a strong blue bias, moderate saturation for its depth, and a subtle violet undertone that adds visual depth without appearing purple.

PMS 276 U works well in controlled lighting environments where its depth can be appreciated without losing detail. Because of its very low lightness, careful surface preparation and even application can help reduce patchiness, particularly on porous or contrasting substrates.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

The following examples reflect commonly cited branding associations and are based on publicly referenced design usage; they are illustrative, not exhaustive or exclusive. This color family is widely cited as appearing in university identity systems and is commonly referenced for financial and professional organizations.

Similar colors:
PMS 275 U: slightly lighter, with marginally more visible blue clarity.
PMS 281 U: darker and heavier, with reduced openness.
PMS 282 U: similar depth but more neutral, with less violet undertone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 276 U

Why can PMS 276 U look different on metal, plastic, or wood?

Pantone PMS 276 U is a visual color standard, not a single paint formula. When it is applied to different substrates like metal, plastic, or wood, the surface can change how the color appears. Factors such as absorption, surface texture, and reflectivity affect perceived depth and saturation.

For brand-facing projects, this means PMS 276 U should be evaluated on the actual material used in the final build. Reviewing a sample on each substrate helps confirm the appearance before full production.

Where can I find the SDS for paint made in PMS 276 U?

The Safety Data Sheet is tied to the specific paint product, not to the PMS 276 U color code itself. Once you select a paint type such as spray paint, epoxy, or urethane, the SDS for that product applies regardless of the Pantone color mixed into it.

You can find the correct SDS by locating the SDS library for the selected product format and base. This ensures you are reviewing safety and handling information for the exact paint you plan to use.

How accurate is the match to Pantone PMS 276 U?

Pantone PMS 276 U is matched as a visual standard, and achieving an accurate appearance can be challenging across different paint systems and finishes. Dark and saturated colors can be especially sensitive to sheen, film build, and lighting.

MyPerfectColor focuses on producing a close visual match to the Pantone reference, but final acceptance should be based on how the color looks on your chosen material, finish, and lighting environment. Sampling is recommended for high-visibility or approval-driven projects.

How do I choose the right paint type for PMS 276 U?

The correct paint type for PMS 276 U depends on the substrate, exposure conditions, and desired finish. Spray paint, epoxy, urethane, and other formats each have different performance and appearance characteristics.

If you are unsure which option fits your project, contact MyPerfectColor with details about the material, environment, and visual goals. This helps ensure you order a product that supports accurate brand color results.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 276 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 276 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 276 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The need for primer for Pantone PMS 276 U depends on the type of paint, the substrate being painted and where it will be located. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 276 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 276 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
