PMS 251 U is a Pantone PMS color used as a standardized visual reference in branding, displays, and design systems. It conveys a vivid, expressive, and modern vibe with a balance of purple depth and magenta clarity that reads clearly without appearing overly dark.

The color presents as a medium-light to mid-value tone with an LRV of 43.67. This color leans cool with a magenta-purple hue, shows moderate to high saturation, and carries a clean magenta undertone rather than a muted cast.

PMS 251 U works well in brand-facing elements where a recognizable purple-magenta identity is required across components. Consistent surface preparation, controlled lighting evaluation, and testing the selected finish can help confirm appearance and uniformity.

Similar colors:
PMS 250 U: slightly lighter and softer, with reduced chromatic intensity.
PMS 252 U: deeper and more saturated, with increased purple weight.
PMS 2592 U: darker and cooler, with a stronger violet bias.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 251 U

Is there a direct paint brand equivalent for Pantone PMS 251 U?

No. Pantone PMS 251 U is a color reference standard, not a formula used by other paint brands. Most paint manufacturers have their own proprietary color systems, so any cross reference is only an approximation.

This is especially important for vivid or saturated Pantone colors like PMS 251 U, where small formulation differences can be visually noticeable. If brand accuracy matters, you should order paint matched directly to the Pantone PMS 251 U target rather than relying on an assumed equivalent from another brand.

Where can I find the SDS for paint made in Pantone PMS 251 U?

The Safety Data Sheet is not tied to Pantone PMS 251 U itself. SDS documents are based on the specific paint product and chemistry you select, such as spray paint, epoxy, or housepaint.

After choosing the product type for your PMS 251 U order, you can locate the corresponding SDS in the SDS library for that product. Always review the SDS for the exact paint type you are purchasing, since safety and handling information depends on the product, not the color code.

How should Pantone PMS 251 U paint compare to my Pantone color book?

Pantone color books are printed reference standards viewed under specific lighting on coated or uncoated paper. When PMS 251 U is mixed into paint, the appearance can change due to sheen, substrate, film thickness, and lighting conditions.

You should expect the paint to visually target PMS 251 U, but it may not look identical to the book chip in all conditions. For brand-critical applications, it is best to evaluate a sample applied to your actual material and viewed under the intended lighting before committing to full production.

How do I order paint matched to Pantone PMS 251 U on MyPerfectColor?

Start by confirming that Pantone PMS 251 U is the correct brand color reference. Then select the paint type that fits your application, such as spray paint or another available format, followed by the sheen and quantity.

Because finish and substrate affect how PMS 251 U appears, double check that your selections match how and where the paint will be used. If the project is high visibility or requires approval, ordering a sample first can help confirm appearance before placing a larger order.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 251 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 251 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 251 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How much area will one spray can cover? And what is Pantone PMS 251 U spray paint made of?

To make spray paint matched to Pantone PMS 251 U. MyPerfectColor uses an acrylic enamel which is a fast-drying durable coating suitable for interior or exterior use. MyPerfectColor custom spray paint enables you to conveniently achieve a professional spray-smooth finish in any color in any sheen. It sticks well to most surfaces including metal, plastics, powder-coatings, cabinets and primed or previously painted wood.

Do I need a primer for Pantone PMS 251 U?
The need for primer for Pantone PMS 251 U depends on the type of paint, the substrate being painted and where it will be located. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 251 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 251 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
