PMS 231 U is a Pantone PMS color identified as a vivid, saturated pink with a cool, magenta-leaning character. It is frequently chosen for brand-driven applications where expressive color and immediate visibility are important.

The color has a mid-range lightness with an LRV of 36.65 and reads as visually strong rather than pastel. Its cool bias and high chroma give it a crisp, energetic appearance, with a clean magenta undertone and minimal warmth.

PMS 231 U works well in displays, exhibits, and prototypes where brand recognition is the primary goal. Because of its saturation, it may benefit from careful surface preparation and multiple coats, and its appearance can shift noticeably with changes in lighting and finish.

Similar colors:
PMS 230 U: slightly warmer and less saturated, with a softer pink appearance.
PMS 232 U: deeper and more intense, with increased visual weight.
PMS 219 U: brighter and more fluorescent in appearance, with higher visual energy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 231 U

Why is there no exact cross-reference from Pantone PMS 231 U to other paint brand colors?

Pantone PMS 231 U is a color communication standard, not a shared paint formula. Most paint brands develop their own color palettes, pigments, and mixing systems, so an exact equivalent rarely exists.

Highly saturated Pantone colors like PMS 231 U are especially difficult to convert because pigment strength, base color, and finish all influence the final appearance. A visual match made to the Pantone reference is typically the correct approach, rather than relying on a named equivalent from another brand.

When is ordering a standard Pantone PMS 231 U match the right choice?

Ordering a standard match to Pantone PMS 231 U is appropriate when the Pantone reference itself is the approved color target. This is common for brand-facing applications like displays, signage, exhibits, prototypes, and marketing installations.

In these cases, visual alignment to the Pantone standard matters more than matching an existing painted surface or material. PMS 231 U should be used as the color goal, with the understanding that finish and substrate can influence how the color is perceived.

What should I consider before using Pantone PMS 231 U in a retail or pop-up environment?

For retail and pop-up installations, evaluate Pantone PMS 231 U under the actual lighting where it will be displayed. Lighting type and intensity can noticeably change how saturated colors appear.

Because these environments are high visibility, it is recommended to test a sample on the intended substrate before full production. This helps confirm coverage, uniformity, and overall visual impact at scale.

What should I know about matching Pantone PMS 231 U on metal or powder-coated surfaces?

When applying a Pantone PMS 231 U match to metal or previously powder-coated parts, surface preparation matters. Existing coatings, gloss level, and cleanliness can all affect how the color appears.

Saturated Pantone colors may require additional coats for even coverage, especially over dark or uneven bases. Sampling on the actual metal substrate is strongly recommended before committing to a full production run.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 231 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 231 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Can I use the Pantone PMS 231 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 231 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 231 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
