PMS 202 U is a Pantone Matching System color used as a visual reference for consistent brand reproduction across marketing and display environments. It conveys a classic, formal, and grounded character, favoring depth and seriousness over brightness.

The color reads very dark, with a low Light Reflectance Value of 10.71, and sits firmly in the warm red-burgundy range. Its moderate saturation and subtle brown undertone soften vibrancy and add visual weight, making it feel established rather than energetic.

PMS 202 U is frequently specified for collegiate and institutional identity systems and is often applied to logos, signage, and environmental graphics that require a traditional, authoritative tone.

This color performs best in controlled brand applications where consistent depth is critical. Uneven film build or inconsistent surface preparation can affect perceived uniformity, and lighting conditions may cause the color to appear darker or more subdued, especially in low or cool light.

The following examples reflect commonly cited branding associations and are based on publicly referenced design usage; they are illustrative, not exhaustive or exclusive. PMS 202 U is widely cited in branding literature as closely associated with Harvard University’s crimson identity system, and it is commonly referenced in academic and institutional branding as a benchmark for deep, traditional crimson tones.

Similar colors:
PMS 201 U: slightly darker and more muted, with less red clarity.
PMS 209 U: lighter and more open, with increased red presence.
PMS 7421 U: more chromatic and brighter, with reduced brown undertone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 202 U

How is Pantone PMS 202 U typically used for sign, display, or exhibit fabrication?

Pantone PMS 202 U is commonly specified as a brand color target for signs, displays, and exhibit components where visual brand accuracy matters. The Pantone code communicates the intended color across designers, fabricators, and vendors, but it does not define the paint formula or finish.

When producing panels, frames, lettering, or branded elements, PMS 202 U should be treated as a visual reference that is matched in the selected paint format and applied to the actual substrate used in the build.

Should I order a sample of Pantone PMS 202 U before full production?

Sampling is recommended for Pantone PMS 202 U when the project is high visibility, requires brand approval, or involves large surface areas. Lighting, substrate, and finish can all affect how this color is perceived once applied.

Ordering a sample allows you to review the color on the actual material and under installed lighting conditions before committing to full production.

How does surface texture affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 202 U?

Surface texture can noticeably change how Pantone PMS 202 U appears. Smooth surfaces tend to reflect light more evenly, while textured or uneven substrates can create shadowing that makes the color look darker or less saturated.

Because PMS 202 U is a deep, saturated color, these texture effects can be more apparent. Evaluating a sample on the actual surface finish helps set accurate expectations.

What basic surface preparation is recommended before applying Pantone PMS 202 U paint?

For best results with Pantone PMS 202 U, start with a clean surface free of dust, oils, and residues. Degreasing and light scuffing, where appropriate for the substrate, can help promote even coverage and adhesion.

Applying a small test area after preparation is a practical way to confirm appearance and coverage before moving forward with the full application.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 202 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 202 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 202 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The need for primer for Pantone PMS 202 U depends on the type of paint, the substrate being painted and where it will be located. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 202 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 202 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
