Pantone™ PMS 166 U

PMS 166 U spray paint is intended for brand-facing applications where visual accuracy is the priority. Durability depends on surface preparation, the paint type selected, and the environment where it is used.

Proper cleaning and priming of the substrate are critical. On surfaces that will be handled frequently or exposed to abrasion, adding a compatible clear coat can improve resistance to scuffing and wear. For outdoor or high-exposure environments, selecting a paint system designed for those conditions is recommended.

Pantone PMS colors like PMS 166 U define a visual color target, not a durability rating. Always evaluate a sample under real use conditions before committing to full production.

When applying a PMS 166 U color match to metal or previously powder-coated parts, surface preparation directly affects the final appearance. Existing coatings should be clean, dry, and free of oils or residues. Light scuffing is usually required to promote adhesion.

Be aware that the color, gloss level, and texture of the existing surface can influence how PMS 166 U looks after application. Even with an accurate color match, differences in substrate and sheen can change perceived brightness and saturation.

For critical brand applications, it is best to test PMS 166 U on a prepared sample of the actual part to confirm acceptance before full production.

PMS 166 U cannot be reliably converted to other paint brand color collections. Pantone PMS is a visual color communication standard, and most paint manufacturers use their own proprietary palettes.

Any cross-reference or lookup is an approximation, not an exact match. This is especially true for vivid, saturated Pantone colors like PMS 166 U, where small differences can be noticeable in brand applications.

If PMS 166 U is the specified brand color, ordering a Pantone-matched paint and approving it visually is the most dependable approach.

The choice between matte and gloss can significantly affect how PMS 166 U is perceived. Gloss finishes tend to increase color punch and saturation, making the color appear brighter under most lighting conditions.

Matte finishes reduce glare and reflections, which can be helpful for close viewing or under strong lighting, but they may make PMS 166 U appear slightly softer or less vivid.

Because finish impacts visual perception, especially for brand colors, reviewing PMS 166 U samples in the intended finish and lighting environment is strongly recommended before final ordering.

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
