PMS 116 U is a Pantone PMS color used as a standardized visual target for brand and identity work, where accurate color communication across vendors and materials matters. It presents as a bright, assertive yellow with a bold, energetic, highly visible, and attention-focused character.

The color appears light and bright, with an LRV of 66.03. It reads warm, is highly saturated, and maintains a clean yellow undertone with minimal neutrality.

This color works well in controlled brand environments where brightness and visibility are priorities. Due to its saturation and lightness, it may require a light primer and additional coats for even coverage, and its appearance should be evaluated under intended lighting and finish conditions.

The following examples reflect commonly cited branding associations and are based on publicly referenced design usage; they are illustrative, not exhaustive or exclusive. PMS 116 is widely cited in branding literature for logistics and transportation brands and is commonly referenced in retail branding for visibility and energy.

PMS 109 U: slightly brighter and more intense, with increased visual punch.
PMS 123 U: warmer and slightly deeper, with a touch more orange influence.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 116 U

What safety and VOC considerations apply when ordering paint matched to Pantone PMS 116 U?

Pantone PMS 116 U is a color reference, not a paint product. Safety characteristics, VOC content, and handling requirements depend on the specific paint type you choose, such as spray paint, epoxy, or interior/exterior housepaint.

Before use, review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the exact product you order and follow the manufacturer instructions for ventilation, personal protective equipment, and application. Do not assume safety or VOC performance based only on the Pantone color name or number.

What safety and VOC expectations should I have when ordering paint matched to Pantone PMS 116 U?

Pantone PMS 116 U is a color reference, not a paint product. Safety, VOC levels, and handling requirements depend on the specific paint type you choose, such as spray paint, epoxy, or interior/exterior housepaint.

What is the typical production lead time for paint matched to Pantone PMS 116 U?

Paint matched to Pantone PMS 116 U is made to order rather than pulled from stock. Production lead time depends on the paint format selected and current production volume.

In general, standard lead times are a few business days before shipping, but this can vary. If your project has a fixed deadline, confirm timing before ordering so production and shipping align with your schedule.

How does surface texture affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 116 U?

Surface texture can noticeably change how Pantone PMS 116 U looks once applied. Smooth surfaces tend to reflect light more evenly, making the color appear brighter and more saturated.

Rough or textured substrates create shadows and uneven reflection, which can make the same color look darker or less vivid. For brand-critical applications, evaluate a sample on the actual substrate and texture before full production.

How does surface texture affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 116 U?

Surface texture can significantly change how Pantone PMS 116 U appears. Smooth surfaces reflect light more evenly, while textured or porous substrates create shadowing that can make the color look darker or less saturated.

For high-visibility brand applications, evaluate the color on the actual substrate and texture being used. This is especially important for vivid, saturated Pantone colors.

Should I choose an interior or exterior paint for Pantone PMS 116 U?

The Pantone PMS 116 U color target is the same, but the correct paint type depends on where and how it will be used. Interior paints are designed for controlled environments, while exterior paints are formulated to handle UV exposure, moisture, and temperature changes.

Select the paint type based on exposure and performance needs first, then apply the Pantone color match within that product. Choosing the right base ensures the color performs as expected in its intended environment.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 116 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
