PMS 7661 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color known for its deep, noticeably blue-leaning violet character. Sourced from the Pantone PMS collection, it is frequently characterized as bold, contemporary, and assertive, with a technical and creative vibe. This color presents a vivid, memorable effect on surfaces, aligned with design goals that require a recognizable, stand-out shade. Its low light reflectance makes it especially prominent in applications where depth and richness are desired.

PMS 7661 C appears dark due to its low LRV (19.05), delivering significant depth.

The color leans cool, skewing toward a blue-purple rather than a true red-violet.

PMS 7661 C possesses a moderately high level of saturation, contributing to its vividness and visual clarity.

It carries a blue undertone that is especially pronounced in cooler or daylight-balanced lighting.

This color’s noticeable depth can be affected by finish; glossier sheens intensify the perceived saturation, while matte finishes can mute its vibrancy.

PMS 7661 C is effective for visual branding, prototype, and display projects where a strong, contemporary violet is required. It maintains its distinctiveness on both large and small surfaces, though its low reflectance makes it more prone to appearing even deeper in low light or shadowed areas. Accurate substrate priming and even application are recommended to achieve uniform color, particularly given the saturation level. When substituting or matching adjacent colors, note that PMS 7661 C will visually anchor a palette, often creating sharp contrast with lighter or more neutral hues, but may appear restrained next to more chromatic violets or magentas.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 7672 C – Slightly lighter and less blue, giving a more approachable violet presence.
  • PMS 7662 C – Deeper and more blue-toned, with less red/violet content.
  • PMS 2096 C – More chromatic and vibrant, especially under direct light, but with a redder undertone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 7661 C

How does the finish or sheen affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 7661 C in real-world applications?

The appearance of Pantone PMS 7661 C will change depending on the finish you choose. A gloss or satin finish will make PMS 7661 C appear more saturated and slightly brighter because the light reflects more directly. This enhances the vividness of the blue-violet tone, making it more visually intense in displays or brand elements. In contrast, a matte or flat finish absorbs more light, which can reduce the perceived saturation and cause PMS 7661 C to look deeper and more muted. When visual brand alignment is crucial, it is important to select the finish that matches the expected visual impact and to account for lighting conditions at the installation site.

What are the basic steps to order paint matched to PMS 7661 C on MyPerfectColor?

To order paint matched to PMS 7661 C, start by selecting this color on MyPerfectColor. Then choose the paint type that fits your project, such as spray paint, paint pens, or housepaint. Next, select the appropriate sheen (matte, satin, or gloss) based on how you want PMS 7661 C to appear in your application. Enter the quantity needed and review any special options or instructions before placing your order. Carefully confirm all selections to ensure your result aligns with your intended brand and visual outcome.

Why is PMS 7661 C not recommended for use as a touch-up specification?

PMS 7661 C is a color standard meant to guide brand visuals and is not formulated for touch-up of existing finishes. Pantone references like PMS 7661 C do not include details about sheen, substrate, or how the original paint was applied. This means ordering PMS 7661 C for touch-up may not produce an acceptable result because it may not match the original finish or reflectance, especially under different lighting. For touch-up or spot repair, refer to manufacturer specifications or the original coating source whenever possible, rather than specifying a Pantone PMS code.

How should I choose the correct paint type for using Pantone PMS 7661 C on interior versus exterior projects?

When using PMS 7661 C for brand or display projects, select a paint type matched to the environment. For indoor installations, an interior grade paint or spray paint is usually sufficient and provides good color accuracy under controlled lighting. For outdoor or high-traffic settings, choose an exterior grade paint or a more durable product such as urethane or epoxy, as these will better withstand weather and exposure while maintaining the appearance of PMS 7661 C. Confirm finish and product type based on where and how the painted object will be used, to support both color consistency and durability.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 7661 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
