PMS 7658 C, from the Pantone PMS collection, is a dark, muted purple characterized by a low reflectance value (LRV 6.37) and a cool, subdued vibe. The color has a refined, technical, and understated presence, supporting professional and brand-driven use cases. Its substantial chroma and distinctive hue provide visual weight and clarity in brand contexts without appearing overly bold or saturated.

PMS 7658 C presents as a dark purple, with very low light reflectance. The color has a cool tendency, avoiding warmth or red dominance. It features moderate-to-high saturation but is not overtly vivid due to its muted character. PMS 7658 C displays a subtle bluish undertone, ensuring it reads as purple rather than red-violet. The color may show increased depth or richness in matte or eggshell finishes; gloss finishes can accentuate its saturation. Appearance can shift perceptibly based on lighting, emphasizing the importance of sample evaluation under project-specific conditions.

PMS 7658 C is functionally specified where a distinct yet subtle brand or accent color is needed—especially in environments, displays, or identity signage that benefit from dark, cool purples. For accurate application, review the color under the intended lighting and finish, as darker purples can appear nearly black in low light and may behave differently than lighter, similar-hued colors. Extra consideration is warranted for coverage, as dark, saturated paints often require attentive surface preparation and consistent film build to achieve uniform appearance.

Similar colors:
PMS 2617 C – A similar purple but slightly brighter and more chromatic, appearing less subdued.

PMS 2665 C – Lighter and more vivid, trending towards a bluer and less muted purple.

PMS 7659 C – Slightly darker and even less chromatic, conveying a more understated, neutralized appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 7658 C

Why is PMS 7658 C not recommended for use as a touch-up color on existing products or coatings?

PMS 7658 C specifies a standard target color without defining finish, sheen, or substrate conditions. Pantone codes like PMS 7658 C are intended for new production or brand-aligned displays where the Pantone reference is the visual standard. If you need to match an existing coating, variables such as gloss level, application method, substrate, and weathering can produce significant visual differences even if the color formula is correct. For critical matching of repairs or touch-up, a custom match to the actual material sample is required to achieve acceptable results.

When should you use a primer before applying paint matched to PMS 7658 C?

Using a primer is recommended for PMS 7658 C when painting over bare surfaces, metal, plastics, high-gloss finishes, or whenever there are concerns about adhesion or stain blocking. Priming can also help ensure a uniform color result, especially with dark, saturated colors like PMS 7658 C, which tend to highlight differences in the underlying surface. The specific primer needed depends on your substrate and paint type. If you are unsure, consult product-specific primer guidance or surface preparation recommendations for best results.

What is the typical lead time for custom paint made to match PMS 7658 C?

Paint matched to PMS 7658 C is made to order to ensure accuracy and freshness. Lead times vary by product type and current order volume, but most orders for standard spray paint or liquid paint formats are processed within a few business days. Specialty or large quantity orders may require additional time. If your project is on a tight schedule, confirm lead times before ordering to ensure your paint arrives when needed.

Are there any notable brands or uses associated with PMS 7658 C?

PMS 7658 C is selected for brand environments, identity signage, and display elements where a deep, cool purple accent is needed. While no specific organizations are highlighted here, its use cases typically involve professional and brand-experience contexts requiring consistent, visually impactful color. This makes PMS 7658 C a practical choice for marketing or fabrication projects prioritizing brand alignment and strong visual presence.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 7658 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
