PMS 7640 C, from the Pantone PMS collection, is recognized for its rich, substantial presence and straightforward, purposeful character. This color exhibits a bold yet grounded vibe—perceived as confident, corporate, strong, and contemporary, with a professional edge suitable for consistent application across marketing and brand-driven projects.

PMS 7640 C appears distinctly dark, with a low LRV (10.51), contributing to its visual weight. The color leans toward a neutral-to-cool red, with only subtle warmth and undertones that are muted, lacking obvious orange influence. This color demonstrates moderate-to-high saturation, giving it visual intensity while avoiding excessive brightness. PMS 7640 C has a restrained chroma for a red, producing a sophisticated, controlled look rather than something overtly vivid or playful. The color is sensitive to finish; gloss finishes increase perceived vibrancy, while matte or eggshell can deepen its appearance.

PMS 7640 C works well in environments requiring a prominent but composed red, such as exhibit panels, branded fixtures, and display graphics. Consistent color appearance depends on selecting a finish that supports the intended impact; higher-gloss finishes will make the color appear more saturated and lighter, while matte finishes enhance its depth and subtlety. This color’s coverage may benefit from careful surface prep, as saturated reds sometimes require additional coats for uniform opacity. Compared to other reds in the Pantone system, PMS 7640 C is less orange and less vivid, offering a more measured and corporate red presentation.

PMS 201 C: A touch darker and more muted, leaning toward a deeper burgundy.

PMS 7622 C: More chromatic and brighter, registering as a higher-impact, classic red.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 7640 C

How does surface texture impact the appearance of Pantone PMS 7640 C in brand-facing applications?

The perceived color of PMS 7640 C can shift noticeably based on the surface texture where it is applied. Smooth, glossy surfaces tend to reflect more light, making the color appear more vibrant and slightly lighter, which can highlight PMS 7640 C's saturated red character. Matte or textured finishes scatter light and produce subtle shadowing, resulting in a deeper, more subdued look. For accurate brand consistency, always test PMS 7640 C on the actual surface and finish intended for the project before full production, as texture will impact both saturation and depth.

What are the basic steps for preparing a surface before applying Pantone PMS 7640 C matched paint?

Proper surface preparation helps ensure PMS 7640 C looks correct and adheres well. Begin by cleaning and degreasing the surface to remove any oils or residues. For glossy or slick substrates, lightly scuff or sand to promote adhesion, being careful not to damage the area. Wipe away dust and debris before painting. It is a good idea to test PMS 7640 C paint on a small area first to confirm coverage and appearance, especially since saturated reds like this may require additional coats for full opacity.

Why is using Pantone PMS 7640 C important for creating a consistent brand experience?

Pantone PMS 7640 C provides a standardized color reference that ensures visual consistency across all branded environments, displays, and marketing elements. When this Pantone code is specified and followed, it helps reinforce brand recognition by maintaining the same appearance regardless of vendor or material. This is essential in professional and corporate settings where color alignment is a direct reflection of brand identity.

Where can I find the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for paint matched to Pantone PMS 7640 C?

The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for paint in PMS 7640 C is linked to the specific paint or coating product you choose, not the color code itself. To obtain the correct SDS, locate the product type (such as spray paint or house paint) on the MyPerfectColor site and access the SDS from the SDS library for that product. Always review the SDS before use to understand health, safety, and handling information for the selected PMS 7640 C product.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 7640 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
