PMS 2278 C is a standardized color in the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, widely used for branding, signage, and industrial design settings where consistent color reproduction is required. The color is vivid, energetic, technical, modern, and attention-grabbing. PMS 2278 C is selected for its strong visual presence, which stands out in both print and painted applications.

PMS 2278 C appears moderately dark for a green-yellow, with an LRV of 17.16, indicating lower reflectance and deeper color intensity. The color presents a cool yellow-green hue, leaning distinctly toward the green spectrum with a noticeable yellow influence. PMS 2278 C features high saturation, resulting in a bold and visually prominent appearance. The undertone is crisp and clean, with minimal muted or gray influence. This color’s appearance can shift in different finishes, tending to look brighter and more vibrant with a gloss finish, and slightly muted in matte applications.

PMS 2278 C works well in environments requiring bold, recognizable color—such as branded displays, signage, or prototypes—where consistency across different materials is important. For even, saturated appearance, surface preparation should ensure a smooth, neutral base; color coverage may require multiple coats, especially over dark substrates. Lighting conditions can significantly affect perception, with fluorescent lighting enhancing vibrancy and warm lighting possibly muting the cool undertone. When compared to other bright green-yellows, PMS 2278 C generally appears slightly deeper and more vivid, with a cleaner chromatic profile.

Similar colors:

PMS 2287 C – Darker and more muted, resulting in a less bright appearance.

PMS 375 C – Brighter and more chromatic, with a more intense yellow-green character.

PMS 2294 C – Greener and cooler; less of the yellow influence present in PMS 2278 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 2278 C

How can I use Pantone PMS 2278 C for prototyping and concept models to ensure brand alignment?

PMS 2278 C is commonly specified during prototype and concept model development when it is important to evaluate the visual alignment of a brand color on real materials. For best results, choose a paint format that closely replicates the intended production surface, such as spray paint for plastics or metals. Consider ordering the sheen that most closely matches your intended finish, since matte and gloss can change how PMS 2278 C appears. Plan to review a sample or prototype under the lighting conditions of the final environment to confirm the color meets brand expectations before committing to production-scale orders.

What do I need to know to order paint matched to Pantone PMS 2278 C on MyPerfectColor?

To order paint matched to PMS 2278 C, select your desired paint format (such as spray paint, paint pens, or brush-in-cap bottles) and choose the appropriate sheen based on your project needs. Enter the quantity needed for your application. Double check the color code (PMS 2278 C) before finalizing your order to ensure brand alignment. If ordering for evaluation, you may want to start with a small quantity or sample size. You will have the option to review product details and finish before checkout, helping you avoid mistakes.

Are there special coverage considerations when using Pantone PMS 2278 C due to its color properties?

PMS 2278 C is a highly saturated yellow-green that may have lower hide than less chromatic colors. This means it can require more coats to achieve an even and opaque finish, especially over dark or uneven substrates. For best results, apply PMS 2278 C over a smooth, white or neutral base to reduce the number of coats needed. Plan for additional paint if working with highly textured or non-white surfaces. Evaluating coverage with a sample will help you avoid surprises in your full project.

Where can I find the safety data sheet (SDS) for paint in Pantone PMS 2278 C?

The safety data sheet (SDS) for PMS 2278 C paint is specific to the product type and format you select, not the color code itself. After selecting your desired paint product for PMS 2278 C, locate the SDS by visiting the SDS section linked from the product page. Review the SDS for information on safe handling, application, and disposal of your selected paint.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 2278 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
