PMS 2179 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) standard color, characterized by a deep blue-violet appearance with a cool, technical vibe. It is notably bold, saturated, and controlled, conveying a professional and assertive impression that holds up well in brand applications and environmental graphics.

PMS 2179 C presents as a dark color, with a low LRV of 17.55. The color has a distinctly cool tendency, with a blue-violet orientation. PMS 2179 C is moderately to highly saturated, giving it a vivid quality that stands out against neutral or lighter backgrounds. The undertone is cool and blue-based, with a perceptible violet tinge that becomes more apparent under daylight or white light. This color’s appearance is notably sensitive to finish; gloss and satin finishes will amplify its brightness and chromatic presence, while matte finishes can subdue the violet aspect and deepen its perceived darkness.

PMS 2179 C works effectively in contexts where a strong, professional blue-violet is needed to convey technical reliability or brand authority—especially in display graphics, signage, and architectural brand elements. Lighting conditions and finish selection can significantly shift the perceived brightness and hue; it is advisable to evaluate samples under project lighting. Due to its depth and saturation, surface preparation must ensure smoothness and opacity, as coverage over light or uneven substrates may require multiple coats for uniformity. Compared to similar blue or violet PMS shades, PMS 2179 C reads cooler, deeper, and more assertive.

Similar colors:
PMS 2728 C: Slightly lighter and more vibrant, appearing more chromatic and less deep than PMS 2179 C.

PMS 274 C: Darker and more muted, reading as a deeper blue with less violet presence.

PMS 2086 C: Warmer than PMS 2179 C, with redder undertones making it less strictly blue-violet.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 2179 C

What should I expect regarding the durability of PMS 2179 C spray paint in brand display settings?

The durability of PMS 2179 C spray paint depends on surface preparation, the choice of protective topcoat, and environmental exposure. Proper cleaning and priming help the color adhere and last, especially on challenging substrates. For high-traffic, outdoor, or high-touch areas, consider using a clear topcoat for added protection. Choose your paint type and application method based on how much exposure to weather, sunlight, or abrasion your project will face. Regular spray paint is suitable for indoor display, prototyping, and short-term brand applications; longer-term installations or outdoor use should use a higher-performance paint and always evaluate a test sample under real project conditions to confirm appearance and durability.

What should I know before applying PMS 2179 C to a metal or powder-coated surface?

When applying PMS 2179 C to metal or powder-coated parts, thoroughly clean and scuff the surface so the paint will adhere. Any existing gloss or texture on the substrate can affect how the blue-violet color appears, so test a sample first to make sure the results align with your brand expectations. Variations in finish and base color can influence the perceived depth and coolness of PMS 2179 C, especially for display and marketing elements. Adequate surface prep and sample evaluation are essential for successful results.

How should I use PMS 2179 C in prototyping or concept modeling for brand projects?

PMS 2179 C is often specified for prototypes and concept models when visual brand accuracy is critical. Consider the paint format that best matches your model material and how the finished sample will be handled or evaluated. For 3D printed prototypes or fabricated models, spray paint provides even coverage, but gloss or matte finishes may cause the blue-violet color to appear differently. Create test samples under your actual project lighting to make sure PMS 2179 C meets brand goals before approving final models or displays. Remember that prototype finishes may differ from production-grade coatings, so review results with stakeholders as needed.

When is it appropriate to order a standard Pantone PMS 2179 C match?

Ordering a standard match of Pantone PMS 2179 C is appropriate when the project requires brand consistency for displays, signage, prototypes, or marketing installations where the Pantone color reference is the visual target. Use this approach when PMS 2179 C is specified in brand standards or visual identity guides for presentation, but keep in mind that results can vary across materials or sheens. For multi-material projects or high-visibility, permanent installations, it may be best to evaluate samples or consult brand approval processes to confirm the color under project lighting before committing to large-scale runs.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 2179 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
