PMS 274 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color noted for its distinctly dark blue-violet appearance, used within the Pantone PMS collection. The color reads as strong, bold, and technical, conveying an authoritative and sophisticated vibe with a cool, saturated character. Its low reflectance (very low LRV) and visual weight make it prominent in high-impact applications, particularly where brand consistency and definition are critical.
PMS 274 C is very dark, with an LRV of 1.56, reflecting minimal light. The color exhibits a cool bias, resulting from its blue-violet hue. This color is highly saturated, presenting vivid chroma that maintains clarity even in low light. PMS 274 C carries a blue-violet undertone, contributing to its perception as both classic and assertive. The color is sensitive to finish; gloss finishes can enhance vibrancy, while matte finishes may further subdue its already low reflectance.
PMS 274 C is frequently associated with use in wayfinding, display graphics, branded environments, and promotional displays where a controlled, distinguished dark blue-violet is required. This color is often used in large-scale signage and environmental graphics, especially for organizations seeking a modern and formal palette.
PMS 274 C performs effectively as a feature or accent color in environments demanding brand consistency or strong visual delineation. Due to its deep saturation and low reflectance, lighting conditions and surface preparation have a pronounced effect on the final appearance; gloss or satin finishes enhance depth, while matte can result in a softer, even darker look. Compared to similar dark blues or violets, PMS 274 C may appear cooler and more defined in artificial lighting and may require additional coats for full opacity, particularly over light or porous substrates.
This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

The texture of the surface has a significant impact on how Pantone PMS 274 C is perceived. Since PMS 274 C is a dark, highly saturated blue-violet with very low light reflectance, a smoother surface will reflect more light evenly, making the color appear bolder and slightly more vibrant. In contrast, a rough or textured substrate can scatter light, increasing shadowing and possibly causing the color to look even darker and less saturated. Texture may also make gloss and matte finishes appear differently, so always test PMS 274 C on the actual surface with the expected finish and lighting to confirm the appearance before final application.
Choosing a sheen for Pantone PMS 274 C directly influences its visual impact and how closely it matches your brand reference. Gloss or satin finishes will lift the vibrancy, accentuating the blue-violet tones and adding depth, which suits feature walls or graphic displays viewed from a distance. Matte finishes can make PMS 274 C appear even darker and more subdued because this color already reflects minimal light. Consider the lighting, expected viewing angles, and maintenance needs. Always evaluate a sample of PMS 274 C in the selected sheen and lighting environment before full-scale production or installation to ensure brand consistency.
Ordering Pantone PMS 274 C as paint means you are receiving a product mixed to visually match the standardized PMS 274 C color target as defined by the Pantone Matching System. It is important to note that the PMS number specifies a visual color standard, not a specific paint formula, manufacturing process, or finish. Actual appearance will depend on finish, substrate, and lighting. For critical brand applications, always use a physical Pantone reference and verify samples on your chosen substrate and finish. If you need further assurance, compare your painted sample to the physical PMS 274 C reference under intended lighting conditions.
To achieve optimal, brand-consistent results when applying Pantone PMS 274 C, proper surface preparation is essential. Clean and degrease the surface to remove any contaminants that could affect adhesion or color uniformity. Lightly scuff glossy or slick surfaces to promote better bonding. It is recommended to test PMS 274 C paint on a small, inconspicuous area first to check color acceptability and coverage, especially given its deep, saturated nature and low light reflectance. Good prep helps avoid unexpected color shifts and ensures evenness across all substrates.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
