PMS 7428 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color recognized for its deep, rich, and muted purple appearance with wine undertones. As part of the Pantone PMS collection, it is typically used in marketing, display fabrication, and environments where precise and consistent color reproduction is required. With a character that can be described as subdued, grounded, professional, and authoritative, PMS 7428 C supports brand identities seeking a mature and understated aesthetic.

PMS 7428 C appears as a very dark color, indicated by a low LRV of 5.84, making it substantially absorptive of light. The color has a cool overall tendency, with both muted purple and subtle wine-red undertones. Its saturation is moderate; while rich, it is less vibrant than fully chromatic purples, giving it a controlled and elegant presence. Undertones reveal a blend of purple and deep maroon, contributing to depth and complexity. The color exhibits moderate finish sensitivity; glossier finishes may enhance the wine character, while matte finishes will emphasize the muted richness.

PMS 7428 C works effectively in branded environments and displays where an impactful yet refined accent or background is needed. It is best used when a mature, professional impression is required without strong visual heat or brightness. Given its low light reflectance, adequate lighting is important to avoid the color appearing almost black, especially on large surfaces or in dim conditions. Coverage may require additional coats due to the depth of shade and moderate saturation. Compared to similar dark purples, PMS 7428 C reads as cooler and more muted, lacking the intense vibrancy or overt warmth of other wine-related shades.

Similar colors:
PMS 209 C – Slightly warmer and more red, creating a softer, more classic burgundy effect.

PMS 276 C – Darker, cooler, and more blue-toned, reading as a midnight indigo rather than wine-purple.

PMS 518 C – Lighter and with more chroma; appears more violet and less subdued in presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 7428 C

How durable is spray paint matched to PMS 7428 C for branding or display use?

Spray paint matched to PMS 7428 C provides a visually accurate reference to the Pantone color, but the durability depends on factors such as surface preparation, the type of paint selected, topcoat use, and the environment in which it is applied. For branding and display applications, proper surface prep is essential, and using a clear protective topcoat can extend longevity, especially in high-touch or outdoor situations. Choose the paint type based on the project''s exposure to weather, abrasion, or cleaning. Custom-matched spray paints are intended for brand-facing and prototype use rather than harsh, permanent, or high-wear environments.

How should I use PMS 7428 C samples in a brand approval workflow?

For PMS 7428 C, it is best practice to order a small sample before committing to large-scale branding or display builds. Evaluate the sample under the actual lighting conditions and on the same substrate as the final installation. This process helps ensure the color meets brand standards and avoids costly issues later, especially since PMS 7428 C can look nearly black in low light and may need extra coats for full coverage. Always confirm approval from key decision makers before full production.

What should I know about VOCs and safe handling when using PMS 7428 C paint products?

The safety and VOC content of PMS 7428 C paint products will depend on the specific type of paint you select. It is important to review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for any product you order and to follow safe use practices, including adequate ventilation, personal protective equipment, and proper storage. If you have specific safety or compliance requirements, request relevant documentation before purchase.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 7428 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
