PMS Black 5 C is a Pantone PMS color, widely utilized in graphic and industrial design for its neutral, muted, and earthy presence. This shade conveys a grounded and understated vibe, with a subtle warmth that differentiates it from cooler blacks. It often reads as a dark espresso or charcoal brown, supporting applications where deep color is needed without the starkness of a true black. The low LRV indicates a very dark appearance under most lighting conditions.
PMS Black 5 C exhibits a very low light reflectance value (LRV 3.8), resulting in a distinctly dark appearance. The color’s undertone is warm, displaying muted brown notes rather than pure neutral or cool black. Saturation is moderate, contributing to a softer, less intense look compared to deeper blacks. This color is not highly sensitive to finish, but differences in sheen can accentuate or subdue its brown undertone. The hue sits near the neutral axis but with a characteristic subtle reddish-brown warmth.
PMS Black 5 C is specified when a deep, understated black is needed without the harshness of absolute black. It is well-suited for branding, signage, displays, and fabricated elements where a muted or natural aesthetic is preferred. Evaluate surface gloss carefully, as high-gloss finishes can make the color appear deeper and more neutral, while matte or eggshell finishes will emphasize its brown undertone. Lighting plays a significant role in color perception for this shade: in warm lighting, the brown cast will be more apparent, while cool lighting can mute the undertone. When compared to other near-black Pantone options, PMS Black 5 C delivers a more organic and versatile dark base, but may appear softer and less technical.

To ensure your prototypes align visually with brand standards, select the Pantone PMS Black 5 C color code for all paint or coating needs. For most concept models, spray paint and other coating options matched to PMS Black 5 C offer the most direct path to brand color alignment. Evaluate your prototype under the intended display lighting, as PMS Black 5 C's warm undertone and deep value may look different under various conditions. When brand appearance is critical, test the color on your actual substrate and finish before full production. Select a finish (matte or gloss) that matches your intended outcome, as finish can influence perceived darkness and undertone in this muted, brown-black shade.
One spray can of Pantone PMS Black 5 C typically covers about 20 to 25 square feet for a single coat on a smooth, nonporous surface. Coverage may vary if your surface is porous, textured, or requires multiple coats for uniform appearance. PMS Black 5 C is very dark and usually provides good hide, but porous or light-colored surfaces may still need additional coats to ensure even coverage. For large projects or when close color alignment is critical, test on a small section first to assess coverage and appearance, then calculate total quantity based on actual needs and the recommended two-coat process.
Pantone PMS Black 5 C is a standardized color code widely specified by brands to ensure that logos, displays, and environments have a unified appearance. By using PMS Black 5 C for all painted elements, you support a visually consistent and recognizable brand experience across locations and materials. Consistency is especially important for brand-facing installations, signage, and exhibits, where deviations in color could undermine brand recognition or perceived professionalism. Always confirm the chosen paint matches the PMS Black 5 C reference standard before production.
If you are ordering paint for Pantone PMS Black 5 C, choose a paint type designed for the environment where it will be applied. For strictly indoor settings such as displays, trade show elements, or interior signage, standard interior paints or finishes are suitable. For outdoor use or where painted surfaces will experience harsh conditions, select a paint labeled for exterior applications to ensure durability and color retention. Always specify the PMS Black 5 C code to maintain brand alignment, regardless of paint chemistry.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS Black 5 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
