PMS 195 C is a standard color in the Pantone Matching System, known for its deep, muted red appearance with a subtle sophistication. It is often described as strong, traditional, and direct while maintaining a restrained vibrancy. The color has a low light reflectance value, contributing to its substantial visual weight, and is recognized for supporting authoritative, established, and visually grounded color schemes.

PMS 195 C appears distinctly dark due to its low LRV (6.65). The color maintains a neutral-to-warm tendency, stemming from its red base and slight brown undertone. PMS 195 C is moderately saturated, with chroma yielding a strong but not overly vivid presence. The color carries muted, earthy undertones, avoiding the brightness of more primary reds. PMS 195 C is sensitive to finish, with matte applications reading deeper and less lively, while gloss increases perceived saturation and depth.

PMS 195 C works well where a substantial, serious red is needed to reinforce stability or tradition in branded environments. Evaluate coverage expectations for high-chroma reds, as additional coats may be required for full opacity, especially over light substrates. This color’s appearance can shift based on finish and lighting – confirm suitability with a physical sample in the project’s specific context. It distinguishes itself from more primary reds by offering a muted, more sophisticated effect that resists appearing too vivid or brash.

Similar colors:
PMS 201 C: Slightly deeper and more muted, providing a more subdued effect.

PMS 188 C: Darker and even earthier, pushing further into a brown-red character.

PMS 202 C: Similar value but more vibrant and visually chromatic.

PMS 194 C: A shade lighter and with less brown influence, reading closer to a wine red.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 195 C

How does the finish or sheen affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 195 C in branding applications?

The finish you select for Pantone PMS 195 C will have a major impact on how the color appears in real-world settings. A matte finish tends to make PMS 195 C look deeper and more muted, which can reduce reflections but also slightly lessen perceived saturation. In contrast, a gloss finish increases perceived saturation and visual depth, making the color look richer and more lively but also more reflective. Satin sits between these effects. It is best practice to confirm your finish choice with a physical sample before large-scale rollout to ensure the final visual meets your brand expectations.

What steps help achieve a consistent look when applying PMS 195 C over large display or exhibit surfaces?

To maintain color consistency with PMS 195 C on large areas, use the same paint batch, application method, and number of coats across the surface. This muted red can show subtle application differences more than lighter or less saturated colors. Spray paint, airless spraying, or rolling are best applied in multiple thin, even coats. Do not cut back on recommended coverage because highly saturated colors may be less forgiving to missed spots or variations in film thickness. Good surface prep and planning help prevent patchy results and maintain uniformity for brand-critical installations.

What should I expect regarding durability when using spray paint matched to Pantone PMS 195 C?

The durability of spray paint matched to PMS 195 C depends largely on surface preparation, the environment, and whether a topcoat is used. For best results, apply to a clean and properly primed surface, selecting a paint type rated for your conditions if exposure is a concern. Adding a compatible clear topcoat can boost protection and help preserve color appearance for branding or display. Consider the demands of your project and environmental factors such as UV exposure or moisture to select the most suitable product format.

How do undercoats and multiple coats affect coverage for Pantone PMS 195 C?

PMS 195 C is a deep, moderately saturated color that may require more than one coat, especially when applied over light or high-contrast substrates. Using a uniform basecoat that is similar in value to PMS 195 C can help improve coverage and consistency. Applying multiple coats as recommended provides better hide and reduces the chance of uneven color, which is important for visual brand accuracy. Always plan for additional paint or coats on brand installations featuring PMS 195 C to achieve full opacity and smooth results.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 195 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
