PMS 194 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, widely used where precise color communication is required for branding, marketing, and display fabrication. This color conveys a deep, strong, professional, and authoritative vibe with a muted, mature character. The low LRV (8.5) places it firmly within the dark color range, making it visually prominent on lighter backgrounds. Its undertone leans slightly towards a muted, cool red rather than a bright or orange-influenced hue.

PMS 194 C is dark in appearance, as indicated by its LRV of 8.5. The color has a cool undertone, positioned away from warm, orangey reds. It displays high saturation, appearing rich and bold rather than muted or pastel. PMS 194 C is less sensitive to finish than many bright reds; however, higher-gloss finishes may slightly increase perceived saturation and depth. The hue is interpreted as a balanced, slightly bluish red rather than a scarlet or brick tone.

PMS 194 C is commonly chosen when a brand requires a deep red that is easily distinguishable from standard reds and is less likely to be mistaken for safety or warning colors. It works well against light-colored substrates and provides strong visual contrast. When evaluating this color for paint, assess its appearance under the intended lighting and finish, as darker reds may shift subtly in hue or depth. Multiple coats may be necessary for uniform coverage on porous or high-contrast surfaces. Compared to similar reds, PMS 194 C will generally read as more restrained, cooler, and more understated in saturated palettes.

Similar colors:
PMS 201 C – Slightly lighter and warmer, showing more evident burgundy and brown undertones.

PMS 202 C – Comparable in darkness but slightly more chromatic and with a subtle shift towards a more vivid red.

PMS 188 C – Darker and deeper, containing additional brown for a more muted and earthy appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 194 C

How can I use Pantone PMS 194 C effectively in prototypes or concept models to reflect brand standards?

To align prototypes or concept models with brand standards using Pantone PMS 194 C, select a paint format that matches your material and scale, such as spray paint for even coverage or a brush-in-cap bottle for detail work. Evaluate the color appearance after applying and allow it to fully dry or cure before judgment, as PMS 194 C is a deep, saturated red and its final look may shift as it dries. Test on your actual prototype substrate under the intended lighting to confirm visual alignment. This helps ensure that your model accurately reflects the intended brand color before moving to final production or review.

What preparation steps should I follow before applying Pantone PMS 194 C matched paint to ensure the best results?

For best results with Pantone PMS 194 C matched paint, start by making sure the surface is clean and free of any dust, oils, or debris. Degrease the area if residue is present, and lightly scuff glossy or slick substrates to promote adhesion where appropriate. Before full application, do a small test spot with PMS 194 C to check color appearance and adhesion on your actual surface. Allow the test area to dry fully before assessing. Thorough prep supports even coverage, especially for this deep, saturated red, which may need more than one coat for uniform color.

How should I compare Pantone PMS 194 C samples during brand approval to make an accurate decision?

When comparing Pantone PMS 194 C paint samples for brand approval, ensure that all samples are applied to the same type of substrate and have the same finish. Use consistent lighting that matches the intended display environment. Allow all samples to dry or cure fully, as PMS 194 C is a dark, saturated color that may change slightly as it dries. Reviewing under the same conditions each time helps you judge whether the result aligns with brand expectations and minimizes the risk of approval errors.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 194 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 194 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
