PMS 696 C from the Pantone PMS collection presents as a grounded, muted hue with a distinctly warm and understated character. Its appearance is best described as earthy, subdued, organic, and professionally refined, fitting contexts that require quiet authority and minimal visual distraction. The Pantone PMS system defines this color for consistent communication across print, paint, and fabricated materials in brand environments.
PMS 696 C reads as quite dark, with an LRV of 11.25. The color has a warm tendency, reflecting a reddish base with earthy brown notes. Saturation is moderate, resulting in a muted, less vibrant effect compared to purer reds. The undertone is notably warm, with clear red-brown nuances and little visible bias toward yellow or orange. The color may appear even darker in low-light environments or when used in matte finishes.
PMS 696 C works well when a muted, professional, yet warm color is needed—such as in brand displays, retail fixtures, or corporate environments that call for restraint and subtlety. Designers should evaluate the paint finish, as matte or low-gloss surfaces will emphasize the shade’s depth, while higher gloss may add vibrancy but could amplify minor surface imperfections. As with most colors in this value range, coverage should be tested, especially over light substrates, and lighting conditions should be considered to confirm that the color performs as intended without appearing muddy or overly dark.
Similar colors:
PMS 471 C: Similar in warmth but appears lighter and more orange, producing a more pronounced earthy vibrancy.
PMS 483 C: Darker and more neutral, with less overt red, resulting in a more muted brown impression.
PMS 4975 C: Significantly darker and less chromatic, conveying a deep, almost black-brown with minimal red influence.

When using PMS 696 C in prototypes or concept models, select a format that best represents the final appearance, such as spray paint or a finish that matches expected production materials. Always evaluate the color under the lighting conditions where the model will be presented. For projects needing true brand alignment, apply PMS 696 C over a neutral primer and confirm coverage, as darker, muted colors can shift if the substrate or coating thickness is inconsistent. Early-stage reviews with stakeholders using actual samples help avoid surprises before final approvals.
To maintain a consistent look when applying PMS 696 C on large areas, follow these steps: Use the same application method and batch of product across the entire surface, apply all coats in the same direction, and ensure each layer is fully dry before adding the next. Start with a consistent base such as a neutral or matching primer. For deep, muted colors like PMS 696 C, two or more coats may be necessary for full hide, especially over light substrates. Work in controlled lighting when possible to spot coverage issues before they are visible in the final setting.
VOC content and safety requirements for PMS 696 C depend entirely on the paint or coating chosen, not the color itself. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific product format you select, such as spray paint or urethane. Follow all recommended safe use practices, including ventilation and personal protective equipment. Proper handling ensures compliance and minimizes health or environmental risks during brand or display projects.
The sheen or finish of PMS 696 C will influence its final appearance. Matte or low-gloss finishes emphasize the color''s depth and minimize reflections, which is ideal when subtlety is required. Higher-gloss sheens boost vibrancy but may also highlight imperfections and make dark colors such as PMS 696 C appear slightly lighter in direct light. Consider the substrate, application method, and the intended environment when deciding on a sheen, and if possible, test samples before a full application on brand displays or fixtures.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 696 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
