PMS 687 C is a standardized color in the Pantone PMS system, often selected in marketing and industrial design for its low-key, technically moderated presence. It reads as a cool, soft lavender with evident gray moderation, producing a calm, understated, and professional visual impact. The color is functional for identity-driven applications where visual control and muted vibrancy are desired without overt warmth or high saturation.

PMS 687 C appears moderately light, with a light reflectance value (LRV) of 32.8.

The color exhibits a distinctly cool tendency due to its lavender-violet base and the absence of warm undertones.

PMS 687 C has low to moderate saturation, giving it a muted and sophisticated character compared to more chromatic purples or violets.

The undertone is subtle gray, which can create a softened appearance and reduce color vibrancy under various lighting conditions.

This color experiences some sensitivity to finish, with higher-gloss sheens slightly amplifying its chromatic elements and low-sheen finishes enhancing its muted, soft effect.

PMS 687 C works well in controlled lighting environments, branded displays, and situations where a cool, understated yet identifiable accent is needed. Inconsistent lighting—especially under warm or strongly colored light—can cause the color to shift either more gray or more pink, so it is best to verify with a physical sample in the intended space. Compared to other purples in the PMS range, PMS 687 C holds chroma in check, remaining muted and rarely overpowering, but provides more color presence than pastel or off-white alternatives.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 686 C is lighter and less saturated, presenting a paler, almost pastel lilac effect.
  • PMS 688 C is darker and slightly more chromatic, resulting in a deeper, more vivid purple impression.
  • PMS 2094 C is cooler and more blue-leaning, creating a clearer, less muted lavender tone.
  • PMS 7444 C is grayer and more neutral, delivering a softer and less pronounced violet appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 687 C

How can lighting conditions affect the appearance of PMS 687 C?

PMS 687 C can look different depending on the lighting where it is viewed. Cool or neutral light tends to keep its muted lavender-violet character, but under warm or colored light, the color may shift to appear grayer or more pink. For accurate brand results, always test a sample of PMS 687 C in the actual lighting and environment where the display or installation will be used.

When is it appropriate to order a standard Pantone PMS 687 C match?

Ordering a standard Pantone PMS 687 C match is appropriate for branded displays, signs, exhibit components, prototypes, and other marketing applications where the visual target is PMS 687 C as specified in your brand or design guidelines. This approach helps ensure color consistency for identity-driven projects but may not account for custom substrate needs or approval workflows in permanent installations.

What should I expect with repeat orders of PMS 687 C and how can I get consistent results over time?

For best consistency when reordering PMS 687 C, use the same product type, sheen, and application method each time. Always refer to the same Pantone PMS 687 C color target for approvals. Even when following these practices, minor differences can occur between batches, so review samples before critical projects and confirm acceptance criteria for brand-focused results.

If you are unsure which paint format or finish is best for PMS 687 C on your project, contact MyPerfectColor with details about your substrate, exposure conditions, and branding requirements. Can I use the Pantone PMS 687 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
