PMS 686 C, from the Pantone PMS System / collection, is a soft lavender-violet with a quiet and subdued character. It is perceived as light to mid-value and carries a gentle, sophisticated, and contemporary vibe. The appearance is muted, restrained, and balanced, lacking intensity but offering a cool, quiet alternative for settings where vivid color is not desired.
PMS 686 C presents as a light to medium shade, with a moderate LRV of 49.89 indicating balanced reflectance. The color has a cool tendency, with a slight violet-red undertone. PMS 686 C is muted in saturation, with low chroma and subdued vibrancy. The undertone is neutral-cool, preventing it from reading as either overly pink or blue in most viewing conditions. Appearance may shift slightly in finish, with matte finishes further softening its presence and glossier sheens providing more definition.
PMS 686 C is operationally useful in environments seeking a neutral purple that remains visually quiet and avoids overt saturation. This color functions well when a sophisticated, contemporary, or branded lavender is needed without drawing excessive attention. Consider sample evaluation under final lighting and substrate conditions, as this color’s subtle undertone and reflectance can shift in warm or cool ambient light. It generally stays softer and more neutral than typical lavenders, making it distinct among purple options for brand or display applications.
Similar colors:
PMS 531 C, which is lighter and reads slightly cooler, adding more airiness to the palette.
PMS 664 C, which is even more neutral and less chromatic, presenting a nearly off-white lavender appearance.
PMS 2092 C, which is somewhat darker and more saturated, offering a bolder effect while sharing the lavender family.

Ordering paint matched to Pantone PMS 686 C means you are targeting a specific standard color used for brand consistency. It is important to understand that while PMS 686 C is a controlled reference, actual results can vary based on substrate, finish, and lighting. MyPerfectColor specializes in producing accurate matches for brand and display use, but even with careful matching, factors like gloss level and application process may cause slight visual differences. Always review a sample when the project is highly visible or requires formal approval, especially if consistency across materials is critical.
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for paint in Pantone PMS 686 C depends on the specific paint type or format, not the color code itself. To find the correct SDS, refer to the SDS library for the product you plan to order, such as spray paint or housepaint. The color PMS 686 C does not affect the safety or handling profile; matching is only about appearance.
To avoid mistakes when ordering Pantone paint, always use the full Pantone code, including any letter suffix, such as PMS 686 C. The color name alone is not sufficient, since many Pantone colors have similar names or numbers. Double-check your brand standard or artwork specification and match exactly when entering your order details. This reduces the risk of receiving the wrong product for your project.
For best visual results with spray paint matched to Pantone PMS 686 C, apply multiple light coats rather than one heavy layer. Allow each coat to dry sufficiently before applying the next. This technique minimizes runs and improves color uniformity, especially for colors that are soft or muted. Following these steps helps achieve a finish that is visually true to the intent of PMS 686 C.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 686 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
