PMS 5517 C is part of the Pantone Matching System (PMS), a standardized system used globally for accurate color specification across print, painted surfaces, and digital design. This color displays a restrained, desaturated, and professional vibe—often characterized as calm, soft, technical, and understated. Its lightness and muted character make it well-suited for secondary brand accents, backgrounds, or spatial applications where subtle color is required without distraction.

PMS 5517 C appears as a light shade, with moderate reflectance (LRV 58.47) giving it a gentle visual presence. PMS 5517 C has a cool tendency, with a gentle blue-green hue bias. This color exhibits low saturation, entailing a soft, subdued, and less chromatic appearance. The undertone is distinctly muted blue-green; it generally does not shift toward strong yellow or red. This color is moderately sensitive to finish: in gloss or semi-gloss, it may appear slightly crisper and cleaner, while matte finishes emphasize its subtlety.

Use PMS 5517 C where a controlled, cool-toned light color is needed to support brand guidelines, spatial differentiation, or environmental graphics without overpowering primary identity elements. Its muted appearance helps minimize visual noise, making it suitable for large-format backgrounds, secondary signage, or environments requiring soft differentiation. When specifying, be mindful that lighting (particularly cool or northern light) may accentuate blue undertones, while finish level will shift apparent vibrancy. Compared to other similar values, PMS 5517 C remains markedly softer and more understated—less likely to dominate adjacent color elements.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 5517 C

How can I use Pantone PMS 5517 C to accurately represent brand color in prototypes or concept models?

When specifying Pantone PMS 5517 C for prototypes or concept models, choose a paint format that best reflects your production methods, such as spray paint or paint pens. Always verify color appearance by comparing both a physical Pantone reference and a painted sample in your intended lighting and finish. This lets you confirm that PMS 5517 C matches visual brand targets before proceeding with larger-scale work. Testing in context helps ensure your prototype aligns with marketing expectations for color consistency.

What should I consider when applying PMS 5517 C paint to plastics or low-energy surfaces?

If you plan to use PMS 5517 C on plastics or hard-to-coat surfaces, be aware that proper adhesion may require special primers or surface preparation. Plastic materials can vary widely, and some may resist conventional paints. Test PMS 5517 C paint on your actual plastic substrate before full production to check for adhesion and finish quality. Use recommended primers if available to ensure durable, brand-accurate results.

How does sheen affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 5517 C in branded applications?

The sheen or finish you select for PMS 5517 C can change how the color is perceived. Gloss or semi-gloss finishes tend to make PMS 5517 C appear slightly crisper and brighter, which may support high-visibility brand elements. Matte finishes emphasize the color's soft and subdued quality, which can be useful for minimizing visual distraction. Always consider your project's substrate and viewing environment when selecting a sheen, and review a physical sample of PMS 5517 C in the final finish before making a final decision.

What are the coverage and hide considerations for Pantone PMS 5517 C paint?

Pantone PMS 5517 C is a light, muted color, so coverage performance is generally moderate compared to highly saturated hues. Still, visual results may depend on substrate color, surface texture, and chosen paint format. For best results, apply PMS 5517 C over a primed or white base to achieve uniform coverage and consistent color alignment with brand standards. Testing first on a sample or mock-up can help set expectations for required coats and final appearance.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 5517 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
