PMS 517 C is part of the Pantone Matching System (PMS), a widely adopted standard for consistent color specification in graphics, display fabrication, and branded environments. Visually, PMS 517 C reads as light, muted, and cool with understated, clean, and technical qualities. The color delivers a gentle lavender appearance, often described as reserved and approachable.

PMS 517 C appears as a very light, muted violet with a lavender direction. The color has a relatively high LRV (66.01), signifying a light value that enhances reflectance and visibility in most applications. PMS 517 C presents a cool tendency, with a soft purple hue and subdued chroma. The undertone of this color leans slightly pink, contributing to its gentle and non-intrusive presence. The color’s subtlety is more apparent in matte or eggshell finishes, while gloss finishes can accentuate the coolness and chroma.

PMS 517 C is selected when a light, unobtrusive violet tone is needed for brand displays or prototypes where color consistency and visual differentiation from standard whites or grays are required. It typically performs well in evenly lit environments and is less susceptible to dramatic shifts in appearance compared to deeper or more saturated purples. For accurate results, confirm color appearance on a physical sample under project lighting, as subtle tints such as PMS 517 C may appear even lighter or less saturated under intense or daylight-balanced light sources. Surface preparation should focus on uniformity, as lighter colors can show substrate variations.

Similar colors:
PMS 516 C is lighter and slightly more muted, with a softer overall appearance.

PMS 5185 C is darker and more pronounced, making PMS 517 C appear more delicate by comparison.

PMS 7436 C is cooler and more neutral, lacking the warm pinkish undertone of PMS 517 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 517 C

How does surface texture affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 517 C in branding projects?

The appearance of Pantone PMS 517 C can change based on the surface texture where it is applied. Matte or eggshell textures can make PMS 517 C appear softer and more muted, while glossier finishes tend to enhance the brightness and perceived chroma. Textured surfaces can create additional shadows and variation in reflectivity, sometimes causing PMS 517 C to look darker or less even. For brand consistency, preview the color on a physical sample that matches your intended substrate and finish before full production.

Can expedited production be requested for Pantone PMS 517 C paint if my deadline is tight?

What should I know about coverage and hide when applying Pantone PMS 517 C?

Testing coverage on your chosen material and ensuring an even base color will help you reach the target result.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 517 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
