PMS 5185 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color identified within the Pantone PMS collection and recognized for its deep, subdued, and professional tone. The color delivers a vibe that is sophisticated, muted, technical, formal, and understated. With an LRV of 3.25, it is among the darkest shades available in the PMS palette, supporting a sleek and controlled visual identity across various materials and substrates.

PMS 5185 C appears very dark, with low visual reflectance.

The color demonstrates a cool orientation, leaning toward deep purple with muted burgundy influences.

Saturation is low to moderate, resulting in a subtle and complex appearance rather than a vivid or overtly chromatic effect.

It carries understated blue and plum undertones, contributing to its sophisticated and cool character.

The darkness and muted chroma may cause the color to shift perceptually depending on lighting and finish, especially in gloss versus matte.

PMS 5185 C works well when a brand or project requires a controlled, sophisticated dark accent or background that avoids the stark contrast of pure black. It is effective for conveying a sense of modernity and formality in corporate, display, or fabrication contexts. Due to its low reflectance, it may appear even darker in low light or matte finishes. Accurate color evaluation should be performed under the target lighting and finish, as shifts in gloss or lighting warmth can cause the undertones to become more or less pronounced. Compared to similar shades, PMS 5185 C exhibits a cooler and more muted character, reducing the potential for red or brown dominance.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

  • PMS 518 C is somewhat lighter and shows a more noticeable red-violet chroma with greater warmth.

  • PMS 504 C is similarly dark but is warmer, presenting more visible burgundy-red undertones and less coolness.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 5185 C

How can lighting conditions affect how PMS 5185 C appears in a brand or display environment?

The appearance of PMS 5185 C can shift noticeably depending on the lighting where it is viewed or displayed. This color is very dark and subtle, so its purple-burgundy undertones may look different under warm, neutral, or cool light sources. Evaluating PMS 5185 C under the actual lighting conditions in your intended environment is important to ensure the color presents the right character for your brand application. If possible, compare both a Pantone reference and your finished paint sample under those same lighting conditions before final approval.

How does the finish or sheen impact the look of Pantone PMS 5185 C in real applications?

The finish you choose for PMS 5185 C, such as gloss, satin, or matte, will change how the color looks in person. Gloss finishes tend to make the color appear deeper and may highlight cool undertones, while matte finishes can make PMS 5185 C look even darker and more muted. Because this color has very low reflectance, a high gloss may increase its visual depth, and a matte finish can reduce the sense of vibrancy. Always review a sample in your specific lighting and finish to ensure it meets your expectations for the project.

What should I consider about shipping times when ordering a Pantone PMS 5185 C paint match?

The transit time for PMS 5185 C paint orders depends on your shipping location and the delivery service you choose at checkout. For brand applications or display projects with tight deadlines, plan ahead and allow for extra time due to possible carrier delays. Review available shipping options during checkout and select one that aligns with your schedule. Contact customer service if you need clarification on current lead times for PMS 5185 C in your preferred paint format.

How do I choose the right paint type for PMS 5185 C for interior versus exterior brand projects?

When specifying PMS 5185 C for an interior project, select a paint format suitable for the materials and exposure found indoors, such as standard interior spray paint or housepaint. For exterior signage or display, choose a format rated for outdoor use, like exterior spray paint or coating. Selecting the appropriate type ensures durability and the best visual result. If you are unsure, provide your project's use case so the correct product can be recommended for PMS 5185 C.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 5185 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
