PMS 505 C is part of the Pantone Matching System (PMS), used for precise color specification in branding, display, and industrial design. This color presents a grounded, professional, and understated presence, with a subtle richness and muted warmth. Its LRV of 5.09 indicates a very dark appearance, making it suitable for applications where depth and a subdued effect are desired.

PMS 505 C appears very dark due to its low light reflectance value (LRV 5.09). The color has a warm tendency, with undertones leaning toward red-brown. PMS 505 C is moderately saturated, delivering subdued chroma suitable for non-reflective or elegant settings. The undertone is earthy, with a subtle richness that avoids a stark or primary look. The color may shift in perceived warmth and depth depending on finish and lighting, appearing deeper or more muted in matte finishes.

PMS 505 C performs well in settings requiring a stable, authoritative, and reserved color presence. It is frequently chosen for design programs where visual contrast or a sophisticated dark accent is needed without appearing harsh. When specifying this color, be aware that low ambient light may further increase its visual heaviness. High-gloss finishes may slightly increase perceived chroma but can introduce glare, reducing subtlety; matte or satin finishes retain an understated effect. Always view samples under intended lighting and substrate conditions.

Similar colors:
PMS 490 C: Similar in darkness but contains a slightly more neutral, less saturated brown undertone.

PMS 504 C: Warmer and less muted, with increased chromatic richness and a noticeable redder hue.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 505 C

What does it mean to order PMS 505 C paint as a Pantone PMS match?

Ordering PMS 505 C paint as a Pantone PMS match means you are requesting a color that visually matches the standardized Pantone 505 C reference. The PMS code specifies a color target, not a specific paint formula, process, or sheen. While MyPerfectColor matches the intended appearance of PMS 505 C as closely as possible, differences in material, finish, and lighting can impact the final result. Always confirm the match visually on your actual substrate and under the desired lighting conditions if brand-critical accuracy is required.

When is it appropriate to specify a standard Pantone match for PMS 505 C in paint?

Choosing a standard Pantone match for PMS 505 C is appropriate for displays, exhibits, prototypes, and branded installations where achieving close visual alignment with the Pantone 505 C color is the main requirement. This approach is best when color accuracy for brand presentation is the priority, but precise substrate-specific matching or approval under site conditions is not required. For large-scale or permanent environments with strict brand oversight, consider evaluating a sample on your materials before full production.

How should I approach ordering PMS 505 C for prototypes or concept models?

For prototypes or concept models where brand color alignment is important, order PMS 505 C in the format that matches your process needs such as spray paint, paint pens, or house paint. Since materials and finishes affect how PMS 505 C appears, test the paint on your actual prototype substrate and under the same lighting conditions planned for presentation. This helps confirm the color represents your brand accurately during evaluations or reviews.

What are the steps to order PMS 505 C matched paint on MyPerfectColor?

To order paint matched to PMS 505 C on MyPerfectColor, first select the desired paint type and sheen, such as spray paint, paint pen, or house paint. Choose the quantity you need and review any format-specific options. Confirm the color code (PMS 505 C) matches your project requirements before completing your order. Reviewing your selection carefully ensures you receive the correct format and match for your brand or display project.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 505 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
