PMS 490 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, widely used for standardization in branding, display, and marketing programs. This color presents a deep, muted brown with a subtle red undertone, commonly perceived as grounded, understated, neutral, and earthy. PMS 490 C is valued for imparting a sense of seriousness or stability in visual environments, especially when reliable color reproduction is needed across materials.

- PMS 490 C appears very dark due to its low light reflectance value (LRV 3.8).

- The color tends toward a warm tone, with a subtle red-brown base.

- PMS 490 C shows low chroma, resulting in a muted and subdued appearance.

- The color exhibits a brown undertone, influenced by a soft red hue.

- PMS 490 C may appear even darker in low light or matte finishes; sheen variations can subtly affect richness and depth.

PMS 490 C is typically chosen when a deep, earthy brown is required, often to achieve a grounded or understated brand effect. It works well as a background, accent, or sign color in environments seeking visual stability or seriousness. Evaluate this color under intended lighting and in the target finish, as very dark browns can appear nearly black under some conditions or lose chromatic subtlety with excessive gloss. As with most low-LRV colors, attention should be given to coverage expectations and uniform substrate preparation for consistent results. In branding scenarios, PMS 490 C provides distinction from pure black or standard browns by introducing a muted, controlled warmth.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 4975 C – Even darker and closer to black, with less warmth.
  • PMS 497 C – Slightly warmer and marginally lighter, with a redder tone.
  • PMS 4625 C – More neutral, less red, and not as deep in appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 490 C

Does PMS 490 C require special attention for coverage and hide during application?

PMS 490 C is a very dark, muted brown with low light reflectance value. When using this color, proper substrate preparation is critical for achieving consistent results. While PMS 490 C is less likely to show through than vivid, bright Pantone colors, its depth means any uneven priming or substrate variation may be visible, especially with matte finishes. To achieve uniform coverage and hide, apply PMS 490 C over a well-prepared, primed surface and consider additional coats if full opacity is not achieved after the first application. Evaluating coverage in the intended lighting and finish can help ensure brand-consistent results.

Is PMS 490 C suitable for touch-up applications or color repair?

PMS 490 C and other Pantone PMS colors are standardized references used for brand consistency across new displays and brand-facing components. They are not developed for touch-up or part repair purposes. If you need precise touch-up matching for an existing coated part specified as PMS 490 C, it is best to send a physical sample to MyPerfectColor for custom color matching. This ensures the closest possible match to your specific finish, substrate, and exposure. Standard PMS 490 C paint is intended for new projects focused on brand accuracy, not for repairing or blending into unknown finishes.

What should I expect regarding the durability of PMS 490 C in spray paint?

The durability of PMS 490 C spray paint depends on several factors, including surface preparation, chosen paint type, and how and where the paint will be used. For best results, always start with a clean, properly primed substrate. Consider the environment where the display or component will be installed when selecting the paint technology. For increased durability or exposure to demanding conditions, discuss topcoat options or specialized formulations with MyPerfectColor before ordering. Always match the paint type to the expected environment to maintain brand color and performance over time.

The team can recommend suitable paint options in spray paint or other available formats to ensure you achieve the best possible appearance and durability for your branding or display project.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 490 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
