PMS 504 C is a branded color in the Pantone PMS collection, widely used by marketing, display fabrication, and industrial design professionals. The color has a very deep and rich vibe, with practical descriptors including muted, restrained, classic, and authoritative. With a notably low LRV, it reads as extremely dark and is most often perceived as an earthy, brownish red that suggests formality and reliability in application.

PMS 504 C appears extremely dark, with a low LRV (2.99) indicating minimal light reflectance. The color exhibits a warm tendency, influenced by its red-brown undertone. PMS 504 C has a restrained (low chroma) and subdued saturation, giving it a muted presence. The undertone of this color leans toward brown, softening the red and contributing to its earthy, traditional character. The color can be sensitive to finish; higher gloss finishes may amplify its depth and richness, whereas matte finishes will further mute its appearance.

PMS 504 C works well in branded environments or products where a deep, dignified, and grounded color is required. It reliably communicates substance and restraint, especially under controlled lighting and in higher-gloss applications. Care should be taken with surface preparation, as low-LRV colors will reveal application inconsistencies more readily. Compared to similar dark reds, PMS 504 C is less saturated and warmer, reducing potential harshness or visual fatigue in large-scale or long-term display. Evaluate in actual lighting conditions and finish for accurate project alignment.

Similar colors:
PMS 505 C: Slightly lighter and redder, with less brown influence, yielding a less muted effect.

PMS 490 C: Similar depth but more neutral, appearing browner and less red.

PMS 188 C: Noticeably more chromatic and lighter, appearing richer and less earthy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 504 C

How do I ensure I order the correct Pantone PMS 504 C color and avoid any confusion between the name and code?

To get an accurate match for PMS 504 C, always specify both the full code and suffix-here, PMS 504 C-when ordering. Relying only on the color name, such as 'dark red,' can create confusion or result in the wrong material. Pantone codes indicate a specific target in the Pantone Matching System, which is especially important for brand and marketing projects where consistency is critical. Double-check all suffixes and collection details to make sure the product matches your brand standard.

What should I consider when using PMS 504 C paint on metal or powder-coated surfaces?

When applying PMS 504 C to metal or powder-coated parts, careful surface preparation is key. Thoroughly clean and, if needed, scuff the existing surface to promote adhesion. Be aware that the color and sheen of existing coatings can influence the final appearance of PMS 504 C, particularly since it is a low-LRV, very dark color. Gloss level will affect how deep or muted the finish appears. It is advised to sample first if color match is critical, especially on reflective or previously coated substrates.

What are the durability expectations for Pantone PMS 504 C when using spray paint?

The durability of PMS 504 C in spray paint form depends on how well the surface is prepared, the type of paint used, and the environment. For best performance, select a spray paint suitable for the intended exposure-indoor, outdoor, or high-traffic conditions-and make sure the substrate is clean and properly primed. Adding a clear protective topcoat can improve resistance to wear, especially in commercial settings that require long-term brand consistency. Always match the paint type and finish to your use case and environment.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 504 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
