PMS 4985 C, from the Pantone Matching System collection, is characterized by its subdued, earthy presence. The color projects a grounded and professional vibe—muted, somber, stable, and deliberate. With a low LRV of 10.66, it reads as a dark color, typically associated with formality, subtlety, and visual weight. It is most often used where a serious, non-reflective brown is required for consistent branded environments.
PMS 4985 C appears dark, as indicated by its low Light Reflectance Value (LRV 10.66). The color has a distinctly warm tendency, drawing from red-brown undertones. PMS 4985 C exhibits low to moderate chroma, resulting in a muted, desaturated look. The undertone can be described as earthy with subtle red, giving the brown its recognizable depth. This color is sensitive to finish—glossy finishes may emphasize subtle color shifts and reflection, while matte finishes maintain its understated impact.
PMS 4985 C is often used in environmental branding for law firms, banks, and other organizations seeking a stable, conservative aesthetic. The color is specified for architectural signage and wayfinding where reduced glare and visual gravity are important.
PMS 4985 C performs well in controlled indoor lighting and in applications where a low-profile, sturdy color anchor is required. It can readily absorb surrounding light, emphasizing its muted, professional quality. When compared to similar colors, PMS 4985 C is more subdued and less prone to warm or orange shifts under various lighting conditions. For accurate visual results, always evaluate on the intended substrate and finish, as sheen and surface texture will significantly influence the color’s perceived depth and richness.
This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Pantone PMS 4985 C is commonly specified in sign, display, and exhibit fabrication as a standardized color target for brand consistency. Many organizations use this Pantone code to ensure a unified look across various branded elements. However, the appearance of PMS 4985 C can be affected by the substrate and finish you use. Before ordering, it is important to sample the paint on the actual material and finish intended for use in your application. This process helps you confirm that the color meets your expectations under real viewing conditions and supports consistent, professional brand presentation.
For Pantone PMS 4985 C, sheen directly affects both the perceived depth and reflectivity of the color. Matte or low-sheen finishes will preserve the muted, professional appearance associated with this color and minimize glare, which is often important for signage, display backgrounds, and panels. Glossier finishes can make the color look slightly lighter and may highlight subtle color shifts or surface imperfections, especially on large installations. When ordering, match the sheen to the intended viewing conditions, distance, and substrate type. Always sample the chosen sheen on your specific material before proceeding with production to verify it aligns with brand and project expectations.
The Pantone book serves as a standard reference for PMS 4985 C, but paint matched to this color may look different depending on material, finish, and lighting. Differences in sheen or substrate texture can cause noticeable shifts compared to the book. For the most reliable assessment, review both the physical Pantone reference and a painted sample on the intended substrate and in the intended lighting. Sampling before final production helps ensure alignment with brand color targets and helps you identify any unexpected variations.
Pantone PMS 4985 C can be ordered as custom spray paint, paint pens, brush-in-cap bottles, and other coatings suitable for brand displays, signage, and fabrication projects. The best format depends on your application and the size or material of the surfaces you need to paint. Spray paint is a practical choice for large or smooth surfaces, while paint pens and brush-in-cap bottles are suited for small details or prototype elements. Always confirm the compatibility of the product format with your substrate, and conduct a test application if project requirements are strict.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
