PMS 498 C from the Pantone Matching System is a very dark, earthy brown used in professional branding and manufacturing environments. The color is best described as subdued, grounded, and robust, with an appearance that feels stable, technical, and reserved. This selection is valued for its ability to convey reliability and subtlety in applications that require visual consistency across multiple substrates.

PMS 498 C appears distinctly dark, with limited reflectance (LRV 5.46).

The color leans warm, informed by its hue angle, exhibiting subtle red-brown tendencies.

Saturation is moderate; the color is muted rather than vivid.

The undertone shows a controlled reddish or brick influence, giving it warmth without pronounced vibrancy.

PMS 498 C is prone to finish sensitivity, with matte or gloss sheens noticeably affecting its perceived depth and richness.

PMS 498 C is often used in packaging design, especially for food, beverage, and specialty consumer goods seeking a grounded presence.

The color is frequently associated with environmental graphics, wayfinding, and signage for organizations seeking understated differentiation.

PMS 498 C functions well in settings where a subdued, earthy tone is desired without the starkness of black or the brightness of more saturated hues. It covers well but, as with all darker muted colors, requires careful application to avoid streaking or unevenness, particularly in low-gloss finishes. Ensure lighting is evaluated in-situ, as warm ambient light will intensify the reddish cast while cooler light may neutralize its appearance. When compared to similar dark browns, PMS 498 C is less orange and less saturated, making it more adaptable to corporate and institutional palettes where a professional, low-key effect is needed.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 497 C—Darker and slightly more neutral, this color is used when an even less saturated and lower-lightness brown is required.
  • PMS 4975 C—Comparable darkness but with a cooler undertone; less visual warmth than PMS 498 C.
  • PMS 4695 C—Somewhat lighter and a touch more orange, for applications needing more warmth or contrast.
  • PMS 1545 C—More chromatic and distinctly warmer, chosen when a more vibrant brown impression is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 498 C

How does surface texture affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 498 C?

The perceived color of Pantone PMS 498 C can vary depending on the texture of the surface. Uneven or textured surfaces scatter light differently than smooth ones, which may cause PMS 498 C to appear slightly lighter or darker, more or less saturated, or even to have subtle sheen-related shifts. For brand-critical applications, always confirm the color appearance on the actual finished substrate and under the intended lighting before final approval.

What are the basic surface preparation steps for painting with PMS 498 C?

To achieve the best results with Pantone PMS 498 C, begin by thoroughly cleaning and degreasing the surface to remove dust, oil, and residues. Lightly scuff glossy surfaces to promote adhesion, using appropriate abrasives for the material. After prep, wipe down and ensure the area is dry. Always test the paint in a small, inconspicuous spot to check for adhesion and color appearance before completing the entire project.

What can I expect in terms of durability when using PMS 498 C spray paint?

The durability of PMS 498 C spray paint depends on surface preparation, the selected paint type, topcoat choice, and environmental conditions. Properly prepared substrates and appropriate topcoats will improve scratch and weather resistance. For demanding or outdoor settings, confirm that your paint system is suited to the exposure level required, and consider additional clear coats where applicable.

What is the recommended spray technique for applying PMS 498 C for best color consistency?

For even, brand-consistent color with PMS 498 C, spray several light coats rather than a single heavy coat. Allow suitable drying or flash time between coats to prevent drips and streaking, especially with a deep, muted color like PMS 498 C. This approach helps achieve uniform coverage and reduces the risk of uneven sheen or color variation.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 498 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 498 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 498 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
