PMS 3285 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System), a standardized color system widely used in brand specification and identity design. The color can be described as vibrant, modern, attention-getting, technical, and assertive. PMS 3285 C reads as a deep but clear teal-blue, balancing cool and vivid qualities that suit brand-driven visual applications.

PMS 3285 C appears moderately dark, with a measured LRV of 20.14, placing it in a lower lightness range. The color is perceived as distinctly cool, trending toward blue within the blue-green spectrum. PMS 3285 C demonstrates high saturation, with bold chroma and notable visual intensity. The color shows a blue undertone, which helps it remain crisp and modern even in variable lighting. PMS 3285 C can shift in appearance based on gloss level and viewing conditions; high-gloss finishes can amplify its chromatic intensity, while matte may dampen vibrancy.

PMS 3285 C functions best in settings where a saturated, cool-toned teal-blue is required for clear visual separation or brand presence. The color can be prone to visible coverage issues in certain paint systems due to its vividness; careful surface preparation and sufficient coats are important for uniform appearance. PMS 3285 C may read darker and more muted in low light, so evaluate samples under final installation lighting. Compared to similar blue-greens, this color maintains greater vibrancy and a cleaner blue undertone.

Similar colors:
PMS 3272 C: Slightly lighter and less saturated, often perceived as a softer blue-green.

PMS 3295 C: Noticeably darker, delivering a deeper teal effect with less chromatic pop.

PMS 320 C: A touch warmer and somewhat less vivid, reading more neutral in side-by-side comparisons.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 3285 C

How should I specify PMS 3285 C for prototypes or concept models to achieve the correct brand color?

To achieve accurate brand alignment with PMS 3285 C in prototype or concept model workflows, use official Pantone PMS 3285 C as your reference target. Select a paint format and sheen that closely mimic your final application or display context, such as spray paint for smooth, even results on models. It is important to view your prototypes under representative lighting and gloss conditions, as the appearance of PMS 3285 C can shift based on surface finish. Always evaluate a painted sample before making approval decisions to ensure color meets your expectations in the intended environment.

What should I consider when using PMS 3285 C paint on plastics or low energy surfaces?

When applying PMS 3285 C to plastics or low energy surfaces, substrate preparation is critical. Many plastics require specialized primers or adhesion promoters to ensure paint bonds correctly. Because PMS 3285 C is a highly saturated color, coverage may also be a challenge, so multiple coats could be needed. Always test PMS 3285 C on the exact plastic substrate before starting production to confirm color accuracy, adhesion, and final appearance. This helps avoid compatibility surprises and supports a brand-consistent finish.

How can I maintain consistency when reordering PMS 3285 C paint for multiple projects?

For consistent visual results with PMS 3285 C across different projects or orders, always use the same product type, application method, and sheen as your approved original. Stick to a single reference for color approval, such as the same PMS 3285 C standard. Even slight changes in formula, finish, or surface can affect how PMS 3285 C looks. Evaluate a production sample under your installation lighting before proceeding with full-scale fabrication to confirm that the repeat order aligns with your brand specifications.

What product formats are available for PMS 3285 C and how do I choose the right one?

PMS 3285 C is available in formats suitable for branding, display, and prototyping, including custom spray paint, paint pens, and brush-in-cap bottles. Spray paint is ideal for larger components and smooth, even coverage. Paint pens and brush-in-cap bottles suit detail work or small surfaces during model building or brand sample creation. Choose your paint format based on the application area, surface type, and production scale. When uncertain, order a sample to review coverage and appearance on your actual substrates.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 3285 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
