PMS 302 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, a widely referenced industrial and branding color standard. The visual character of PMS 302 C is deep, cool, and restrained, with a distinctly dark blue tone and minimal chromatic vibrancy. This color projects a sober, stable, and technical aesthetic, making it operationally useful where understated and professional blue hues are required.

- PMS 302 C presents as very dark, with low perceptual lightness (LRV: 4.42). - The color exhibits a cool, blue tendency with negligible visible warmth. - PMS 302 C is moderately muted, displaying lower chroma than saturated blues. - The undertone is a stormy, blue-black shade—sharper and cooler than navy, with minimal green influence. - The perceived depth of PMS 302 C can shift subtly with lighting changes; matte finishes may amplify its muted qualities, while gloss finishes can reveal more of its blue base. - The color may appear nearly black in low-light conditions or at small scale.

PMS 302 C is often specified in branding, signage, environmental graphics, and display components where a refined, deep blue is required.

PMS 302 C is well-suited for projects demanding a strong, unobtrusive blue that remains consistent under various lighting environments. It is operationally favored when a color must convey authority without appearing vibrant or attention-seeking. Expect PMS 302 C to require rigorous substrate preparation and sufficient film build for full coverage, as its low lightness may challenge hide over contrasting backgrounds. Variations in finish and lighting can have a pronounced impact on its perceived depth and blue character compared to other dark blues.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 302 C

Why is Pantone PMS 302 C not directly available in other paint brand color collections?

Pantone PMS 302 C is defined by the Pantone Matching System and serves as a standardized color reference for brand accuracy. Most paint brands have unique palettes with different color formulations, so PMS 302 C does not have a direct equivalent in those collections. Cross-referencing often leads to inexact results, especially for deep or vivid colors like PMS 302 C. For consistent brand representation, always specify the Pantone code and order products custom matched to PMS 302 C.

When should I use a primer with Pantone PMS 302 C paint?

The need for primer when using Pantone PMS 302 C depends on your substrate, paint type, and exposure conditions. Primer is recommended for uncoated, porous, or contrasting surfaces to ensure proper adhesion and even color. Due to the low lightness of PMS 302 C, a primer may also help achieve uniform coverage. Review the substrate and product requirements or consult paint system guidance for your application before proceeding.

How do lighting and viewing conditions affect Pantone PMS 302 C?

Pantone PMS 302 C has a very dark, muted blue appearance that can change noticeably under different lighting types. Cool lighting may emphasize its blue undertone, while warm or low lighting can make it appear almost black. Viewing PMS 302 C in the actual lighting and finish to be used is essential to confirm that the color meets your visual expectations for brand or display applications.

What is the recommended approach for repairing or touching up Pantone PMS 302 C if precise match is required?

Pantone PMS 302 C paint is intended for brand color reproduction and display applications. If you need a touch-up grade match to an existing part or finish, send a physical part for color matching rather than ordering by code. PMS codes alone do not account for substrate, finish, or aging, so sending a sample is necessary for precise compatibility in touch-up scenarios.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 302 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 302 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 302 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 302 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 302 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
