PMS 191 C is part of the Pantone Matching System, widely referenced in branding, marketing displays, and industrial design for its vivid, impactful presence. The color has a strong, clean, and energetic vibe, appearing distinctly bold, contemporary, and highly chromatic. It is often specified when a color statement is needed for physical brand applications. This color is aligned with brand environments where vibrancy, consistency, and visual recognition are key operational requirements.

PMS 191 C presents as a moderately dark color, with a qualitative lightness reflecting its lower LRV. The color has a distinctly warm tendency, leaning toward the red side of the spectrum. PMS 191 C is highly saturated, contributing to a visually dynamic and assertive impression. The undertone is predominantly pink-red, with very little neutrality. The color may exhibit finish sensitivity; gloss or satin can intensify its vibrancy, while matte may reduce perceived saturation.

PMS 191 C is specified for branding and display applications requiring consistent, energetic color impact. It works well when accurate visual representation of the Pantone standard is required on display, signage, or prototype components, particularly for brand environments prioritizing vibrancy and attention. Match this color using a physical Pantone reference and real paint sample under intended lighting conditions. Because of its high chroma and lower LRV, accurate substrate preparation is essential—surface inconsistencies and improper undercoats can affect uniformity and perceived intensity. This color tends to behave bolder than reds or magentas with slightly muted saturation, and may require additional coats for full opacity on high-contrast surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 191 C

How can lighting affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 191 C in a branding or display setting?

The appearance of Pantone PMS 191 C can change noticeably depending on the type of lighting and viewing conditions. Vivid colors like PMS 191 C are especially sensitive to light quality, so fluorescents, LEDs, or natural daylight can each shift how the color looks. To achieve brand consistency, always compare PMS 191 C samples to your Pantone standard under the lighting used in your final environment. This helps reveal any shifts in brightness or undertone before final production and reduces the risk of mismatch in the installed setting.

Where do I find the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for paint matched to Pantone PMS 191 C?

The SDS for paint in Pantone PMS 191 C is determined by the type of paint or coating you select, not by the color code itself. To access the correct SDS, go to the SDS or product information section for your chosen paint type or format. Always consult the SDS before using the product, especially if you have specific safety or compliance requirements for your project.

When is it appropriate to specify Pantone PMS 191 C for sign, display, or exhibit fabrication?

Pantone PMS 191 C is commonly used as a brand-standard color target when producing signs, displays, and exhibit components where visual consistency is essential. If your project requires matching a specific Pantone color across various materials or parts, reference a physical Pantone standard and test PMS 191 C paint samples on the actual substrates under installation lighting. This step is important because material and lighting can affect the perceived match, and proper sampling helps ensure your finished elements meet brand expectations.

What should I consider when applying Pantone PMS 191 C to plastics or low energy surfaces?

Plastics and low surface energy materials may not allow paint to adhere properly without special preparation. Before using Pantone PMS 191 C on these surfaces, check if a specific primer or adhesion promoter is needed for your plastic type. Always conduct a test application on the actual substrate to confirm adhesion and appearance before full production. This reduces the risk of peeling or color inconsistency and ensures your brand display maintains a professional finish.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 191 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
