PMS 1817 C is part of the Pantone Matching System (PMS), a standardized color system widely used in branding, marketing, and design applications where consistent reproduction is essential. This color exhibits a restrained, professional, and earthy vibe, presenting as grounded, technical, practical, and understated. Its low light reflectance makes it suitable for contexts demanding a subtle, robust effect rather than visual brightness or vibrancy.

PMS 1817 C appears very dark, with an LRV of 4.1. The color has a warm tendency, due to a muted reddish-brown hue. PMS 1817 C has moderate saturation, presenting as rich but not overtly vivid. The undertone is distinctly brown with a subdued red influence. The color generally presents as matte or low-sheen in design specs; gloss can slightly enhance its depth and reveal subtle undertones.

PMS 1817 C works well in applications requiring an authoritative, discreet, or naturalistic visual impression—such as background fields, accent panels, or brand-compliant fixtures. Its low reflectance means it reads very dark in most lighting; designers should test it under intended illumination to confirm perceptual depth and warmth. While similar colors may skew redder, more neutral, or brighter under the same conditions, PMS 1817 C reliably maintains its muted, warm brown character but may show more visual "density" in a matte finish versus glossier surfaces.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

PMS 4975 C is similar but presents as even darker and more neutral, with less visible red influence.

PMS 490 C is somewhat lighter and redder, yielding a warmer, slightly more vibrant effect.

PMS 7596 C is related but displays more chromatic orange undertones, appearing brighter and slightly less muted.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 1817 C

How can I be sure I am ordering the correct version of Pantone PMS 1817 C for my brand project?

When specifying PMS 1817 C, always reference your brand guidelines or project documentation to confirm the exact Pantone code, including any suffix (such as C, U, or CP) and series context. Different suffixes can indicate different substrates or finish standards, which may affect the appearance and acceptance of the color. Confirming the full Pantone code in advance will help ensure color alignment and avoid ordering errors.

What should I consider about hide and undercoats when using Pantone PMS 1817 C paint?

PMS 1817 C is a deep, muted reddish-brown that may require more than one coat for full coverage, especially over light or contrasting surfaces. For best results and visual uniformity, consider using a primer or undercoat color close to PMS 1817 C or a neutral gray. Planning for multiple coats can help achieve a consistent appearance and reduce the risk of substrate show-through on demanding installations.

What should I keep in mind when using PMS 1817 C in retail or pop-up brand environments?

For pop-up or retail settings using PMS 1817 C, evaluate the color under final lighting conditions and select finishes appropriate for durability and cleaning needs. Sampling the paint on site helps verify that the appearance matches brand expectations before large-scale application. Consider the material and expected wear to choose the best paint format for your installation.

How should I prepare surfaces before applying paint matched to Pantone PMS 1817 C?

Proper surface preparation is key for successful results with PMS 1817 C. Clean the surface to remove dust, dirt, oil, and grease. Lightly scuff glossy or smooth surfaces to improve paint adhesion. Always test the paint on a small area to confirm adhesion and color acceptance before the full application, especially when working on new or unique substrate types.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 1817 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 1817 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 1817 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How do I convert PMS 1817 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 1817 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
