Pantone™ PMS 163 C

PMS 163 C is typically specified when brand standards require a consistent and recognizable orange for signage, display elements, or exhibit pieces. Using PMS 163 C helps ensure visual alignment across materials and vendors, supporting a professional and unified branded appearance. However, because color appearance can shift depending on substrate, fabrication method, and lighting, it is strongly recommended to sample PMS 163 C on the actual material and finish to be used. For projects where visual accuracy is critical, confirm color acceptance with stakeholders using physical paint samples before full production.

One 11-ounce spray can of PMS 163 C normally covers approximately 20 to 25 square feet per coat on a smooth, primed surface. Highly saturated colors like PMS 163 C may need more than one coat for full uniformity, especially over contrasting or unprimed substrates. To estimate your project needs, measure the total surface area and multiply by the expected number of coats. Add extra for test sprays and any complex surfaces. Always test on a sample area first to confirm hide and adjust your quantity if coverage is lower than expected.

The finish you select for PMS 163 C can change how the color is perceived. Gloss and satin finishes will enhance the vibrancy and brightness of PMS 163 C, making the orange appear more intense and saturated. Matte finishes tend to soften the color's effect, reducing perceived chroma and slightly muting the visual impact. Consider sampling different finishes on your actual substrate to see which option best meets your application and visibility goals, especially when brand or specification standards guide the decision.

To maintain a consistent appearance with PMS 163 C on large projects, start by preparing the surface thoroughly, using a suitable primer for even absorption. Apply paint with steady, overlapping passes and plan your coats to minimize starts and stops. Because highly saturated colors like PMS 163 C can reveal streaks or uneven build, multiple thin coats are preferable to one thick layer. Ensure each coat is fully dry before the next. When possible, use the same batch of paint for all areas to reduce batch-to-batch variation. Sampling a section first can help confirm your process delivers the desired color uniformity.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
