PMS 165 C, from the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, is a bold, energetic orange that is commonly selected for brand, display, and marketing environments where immediate visual attention and brand clarity are priorities. The color presents a vibrant, technical character—often described as eye-catching, dynamic, assertive, clean, and impactful.

PMS 165 C has a medium-light visual tone, with a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 31.59. The color exhibits a warm tendency based on its orange hue. PMS 165 C demonstrates very high saturation, contributing to its intense and vibrant appearance. The undertone is strongly orange, with a subtle red influence, yielding a true, clean orange without significant deviation toward gold or yellow. PMS 165 C may display sensitivity to finish selection, with gloss enhancing vibrancy and matte finishes appearing flatter or less saturated.

PMS 165 C works well in environments where bold brand visibility and differentiation are required, such as signage, marketing displays, and prototype components. Due to its high chroma and saturation, it is important to test the color on actual materials and in relevant lighting, as appearance can shift under various conditions. Additional coats may be required for full coverage and uniformity, especially over contrasting substrates. PMS 165 C tends to hold its vibrant character better than colors with lower saturation but may appear less intense in matte finishes or under low lighting compared to more reflective settings.

Similar colors:
PMS 021 C: Slightly more vivid and red-leaning, appearing even bolder and warmer.

PMS 166 C: Deeper and darker, with more of a burnt orange character.

PMS 172 C: Brighter and somewhat lighter, with a more yellow-biased orange appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 165 C

What safety precautions should I take when using paint matched to Pantone PMS 165 C?

The safety requirements for Pantone PMS 165 C depend on the product type you select, such as spray paint or urethane. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) that comes with your specific paint for details on ventilation, protective equipment, and safe handling. Follow all product-specific instructions and work in a well-ventilated area. Proper storage and disposal are also important. If you have special requirements, review the product's technical documentation before ordering.

How do I decide between matte and gloss finishes when ordering Pantone PMS 165 C for a brand display?

The choice between matte and gloss for Pantone PMS 165 C impacts appearance and visibility. A gloss finish increases color vibrancy and helps PMS 165 C appear more saturated and dynamic, especially in bright lighting or at a distance. However, gloss may introduce glare under strong lights. Matte finishes minimize glare and reflections, but can make the orange look less intense or somewhat duller, which may reduce brand impact. Consider your lighting conditions, viewing distance, and whether punch or glare control is the priority for your project.

Will Pantone PMS 165 C paint always match my Pantone formula guide or solid chip exactly?

The Pantone book standard for PMS 165 C is a reference for consistent color communication, but actual paint may look different due to factors like finish, substrate, and lighting. Glossy paint enhances vibrancy compared to matte, and the material being painted can affect how the color appears. For brand-critical applications, always sample PMS 165 C on the actual materials and under real lighting to check alignment with your Pantone guide before full production or installation.

What is the best way to apply Pantone PMS 165 C spray paint for a smooth, consistent finish?

PMS 165 C is highly saturated and may require extra care for even coverage. For the best result, apply multiple thin coats of spray paint rather than a single heavy coat. Allow adequate flash or drying time between coats to help prevent drips or uneven gloss. Testing on a sample panel first is recommended, especially when full brand color impact is needed. This approach improves coverage and helps keep the appearance consistent across the project.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 165 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 165 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 165 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 165 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
