A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36231 is a muted, cool gray with a slight blue-green cast. It reads more subdued than bright, with very low chroma and a mid-to-dark appearance that keeps the color quiet rather than vivid.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint made to this government color reference can be used for spray-paint touch-up on panels, brackets, enclosures, housings, fixtures, switch covers, railings, carts, and other fabricated parts. It is also a practical choice for maintenance hardware, prototype assemblies, and replacement components that need to follow the specified Fed Std 595C target across metal, plastic, or composite surfaces.
Because the color is low chroma, coverage is usually more forgiving than with a brighter color, but finish still matters. On darker or uneven substrates, the shade may read differently until enough film builds, and gloss can make texture or surface defects more noticeable. In outdoor or high-wear use, the surrounding finish condition can influence how closely the repaired area blends.
This code is a standard color reference, not an official coating system by itself. If you are matching an older in-service part, the aged finish may not look the same as the standard chip, even when the color match is correct. For acceptance-sensitive work, the existing surface condition and sheen should be considered along with the color code.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 36231 *
What does Fed Std 595C 36231 tell me when I order paint, and what does it not tell me?
Fed Std 595C 36231 identifies the color reference target only. It tells you which government color to match, but it does not choose the paint chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, coating system, or any formal approval status for the job.
If your project has requirements beyond color, select those separately from the color code. MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to the selected Fed Standard reference, not an official government-issued coating system.
Will Fed Std 595C 36231 match an older coated part during touch-up?
It may not blend perfectly with an aged surface even when the code is correct. Weathering, fade, sheen changes, texture, and differences in the original coating can make Fed Std 595C 36231 look different next to the existing finish.
If the repair is highly visible or acceptance-critical, a match to the existing part or a full-part repaint can be safer than relying on the standard code alone. For critical jobs, a sample panel or project-specific approval may be the better path.
What documentation applies to a MyPerfectColor order for Fed Std 595C 36231?
The SDS and product data apply to the specific MyPerfectColor product or chemistry you order. A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36231 is only the color reference, so it does not by itself provide SDS information or define the coating formulation.
If a purchase or job package requires documentation, verify the details for the selected product before ordering. Color match and product documentation are separate parts of the decision.
Can the finish change how Fed Std 595C 36231 looks after application?
Yes. Gloss, satin, matte, texture, and film build can all change how Fed Std 595C 36231 appears once it is applied and cured. The same color reference can look different if the finish does not match the surrounding surface.
If appearance next to an existing coating matters, match the finish as well as the color code. A color-code match alone does not guarantee the same visual result on the part.
How do I choose the right product for Fed Std 595C 36231 based on the service environment?
Choose the product based on the substrate and exposure conditions, not on the color code alone. Fed Std 595C 36231 sets the color target, but it does not tell you whether you need spray paint, touch-up paint, epoxy, urethane, or another coating for the job.
For interior use, exterior exposure, abrasion, or chemical exposure, match the product to the service conditions first and then order the Fed Std 595C 36231 color match in the format that fits the application.
