A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 16251 reads as a muted gray with a slight green undertone. It is low-chroma and restrained, so the color tends to stay subdued rather than reading as a clear green.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched spray paint in this government standard can be used on equipment panels, brackets, enclosures, switch covers, vents, cart frames, rails, hardware, and fabricated parts where a Fed Standard 595C reference is specified. It is also useful for touch-up on replacement pieces or for keeping small assemblies consistent across different substrates.
Because the color is low in chroma, the green cast can become more or less noticeable depending on finish and lighting. Coverage, sheen, and substrate color can change the final read, and repairs next to older coatings may show a difference in aging or gloss even when the color code is matched correctly.
For acceptance-sensitive work, an existing-part match or approved sample may be more appropriate than the standard chip alone if the in-service surface has faded, worn, or weathered.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 16251 *
Does Fed Std 595C 16251 define the full coating system, or just the color target?
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 16251 is a color reference target, not a complete coating specification. When you order MyPerfectColor paint matched to Fed Std 595C 16251, you are choosing the color target only. Chemistry, gloss, primer, surface prep, corrosion protection, and any formal approval or compliance requirements still need to be set by the project specification.
If your drawing, manual, or bid package calls out more than the color code, make sure you follow those additional requirements before ordering.
Will Fed Std 595C 16251 match an older in-service coating exactly, or only the standard reference?
MyPerfectColor can make a paint match to Fed Std 595C 16251, but that does not guarantee an exact match to an aged existing coating. Weathering, fade, sheen changes, texture, film build, and the original paint system can all make the repaired area look different next to the surrounding finish.
If the part is already in service and the surrounding paint is old or visibly changed, a standard-code match may be acceptable for some jobs, but a sample match or match to the existing part may be the better choice for acceptance-critical repairs.
What product formats can I order for Fed Std 595C 16251?
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 16251 can be ordered from MyPerfectColor as a custom-matched paint in available formats such as spray paint, touch-up paint, paint pens, brush-in-cap bottles, and other formats where offered. The color code is the reference target, while the product format should be chosen based on how you plan to apply it and what the part requires.
If you are repairing small areas, a touch-up format may be more practical. For larger areas or more even coverage, spray paint may be the better fit.
Can the finish change how Fed Std 595C 16251 looks after application?
Yes. Even when the color match to Fed Std 595C 16251 is correct, gloss level, matte or satin finish, texture, and film build can change how the color appears on the part. The same color can read differently depending on how the coating is applied and what surface it is applied over.
If your project needs a specific visual result, do not rely on the color code alone. Make sure the finish requirement is also defined before ordering MyPerfectColor paint matched to Fed Std 595C 16251.
How should I plan dry time, recoat, and handling for Fed Std 595C 16251 paint?
Dry time, recoat timing, and handling depend on the specific MyPerfectColor product format you choose for Fed Std 595C 16251. Dry-to-touch, recoat, and full cure are different stages, so do not assume they are the same.
Before you start, check the instructions for the exact product you ordered and build your project schedule around those directions. That is the safest way to avoid handling the part too soon or recoating outside the recommended window.
