A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 26270 reads as a medium-deep gray with a subtle cool, blue-leaning cast. The chroma is very low, so it appears restrained rather than colorful, with a steady neutral character that can shift slightly with sheen and lighting.
MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this Fed Standard 595C reference can be used on panels, housings, equipment brackets, vent covers, cart frames, switch plates, fabricated metal parts, and other small or medium components that need a consistent government-standard gray. It is also a practical choice for touch-up on enclosures, guard panels, fixtures, and plastic or composite parts where the goal is to match the specified reference rather than guess at the color by eye.
Because this is a muted, mid-depth color, it usually behaves more predictably than a bright or highly saturated match, but finish still matters. Gloss level, film thickness, texture, and substrate color can all change how cool or dark it reads after application. On repair work, fresh paint may stand out next to an older coating if the existing surface has faded, chalked, or shifted in sheen.
A Fed Std 595C code defines the color reference only; it does not determine coating chemistry, prep method, gloss, or approval status. For acceptance-sensitive work, or when matching an in-service part with aged paint, it is better to compare against the actual surface condition or project sample rather than rely on the code alone.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 26270 *
What does Fed Std 595C 26270 mean when I order MyPerfectColor paint?
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 26270 is a government color reference target, so it tells you which color to match. It does not, by itself, define the coating chemistry, gloss, surface prep, corrosion system, or approval status.
MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to the selected Fed Std 595C 26270 reference, so you still need to choose the product format and coating system that fit your project requirements.
Will Fed Std 595C 26270 match an older coated part for touch-up work?
Not always. Even if MyPerfectColor matches Fed Std 595C 26270 correctly, an older in-service coating can look different because of fade, weathering, sheen change, texture, or prior repaint work.
If the repaired area must blend with an aged finish, a match to the existing part or a full-part repaint may give a better result than matching the standard code alone.
Is a Fed Std 595C 26270 match enough if my project needs inspection or approval?
Sometimes it is, but not always. A correct match to Fed Std 595C 26270 does not automatically satisfy project-specific approval, sample panel, or procurement requirements.
If the drawing, technical order, or engineering authority calls for a sample panel, an existing-part match, or a specific coating system, follow that requirement instead of relying on the color code alone.
How should I prepare metal or an existing coating before applying Fed Std 595C 26270 paint?
Start with a clean, dry surface. Remove grease, dirt, and loose coating, then scuff the surface if the substrate or existing finish needs mechanical adhesion help.
For metal, check for corrosion and use the right primer if your project calls for it. For an existing coating, test a small area first to confirm adhesion and appearance before coating the full part with MyPerfectColor paint matched to Fed Std 595C 26270.
Can Fed Std 595C 26270 be used for indoor or outdoor service?
The color reference does not determine service durability. A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 26270 can be matched in MyPerfectColor paint, but the right product choice depends on whether the part is indoors, outdoors, exposed to abrasion, or exposed to chemicals.
Choose the format and coating system based on the substrate and environment, not on the color code alone. If the part has to hold up in a harsher service condition, verify that the selected product is appropriate for that use before ordering.
