RAL 9011 Graphite Black is a standardized color target, not a coating process. Use this decision guide:

Standard RAL 9011 is typically sufficient when:

• Cross-material coordination is needed and textures/sheens will differ anyway.
• Low-criticality repairs (small chips, functional protection) are acceptable.
• The spec defines acceptance against the RAL standard color, not against an existing part.

Request a sample or OEM-specific match when:

• You must match an existing coated part or assembly (especially powder coat).
• Large-area repaint or high-visibility cosmetic surface is involved.
• Strict inspection/acceptance criteria are in place (e.g., side-by-side comparison to existing parts).
• A known OEM/powder code exists and must be followed.

What to provide for high-certainty acceptance:

• An actual part or retained sample to match (note any aging/wear).
• Required gloss level (60 degrees GU) and any texture requirement.
• Coating type/process if known (e.g., specific powder brand/code).

Risk note: Powder and liquid paints can match color yet differ in gloss/texture. If acceptance is against an existing part, ordering a generic RAL 9011 may be rejected.

Select by defect size, access, and finish control:

• Paint pen: Pinpoint chips and fine scratches (up to ~2 mm). Fast, controlled application on edges and hardware.
• Brush bottle: Chips/scratches ~2-20 mm or small areas where filling and feathering are needed.
• Aerosol spray: Larger spots, panels, or when you need to blend across an area. Use for parts too small to set up spray equipment.
• Bulk paint for spray gun: Best film control and color/sheeen consistency on large surfaces or when following a plant process.

Application tips:

• Clean/degrease, remove rust, and feather damaged edges.
• Scuff glossy surfaces for adhesion; spot-prime bare metal as needed.
• Apply multiple light coats, allowing proper flash time.
• Prove-in on a small, inconspicuous area to confirm color/sheeen blend with the existing RAL 9011 finish.

Primer needs depend on the substrate and surface condition:

• Bare carbon steel: Yes. Use a rust-inhibitive primer (e.g., epoxy or DTM system). Remove rust and mill scale.
• Previously coated metal (sound coating): Usually no full primer. Clean, scuff, and spot-prime any exposed metal.
• Aluminum: Yes. Clean, deoxidize, then use epoxy or a suitable self-etch/adhesion-promoting primer.
• Galvanized steel: Yes. Clean/passivate as required; use a galvanized-compatible primer (wash/etch or epoxy designed for zinc).
• Stainless steel: Recommended. Abrade and use epoxy or other adhesion-promoting primer.
• Plastics: Use a plastic adhesion promoter or plastic-specific primer. Polyolefins (PE/PP) may need specialty primers or surface treatment.
• Previously powder-coated parts (intact): Typically no primer. Clean and scuff; spot-prime only where bare metal is exposed.

General rule: if you expose bare substrate during prep, prime that area before applying RAL 9011. Follow product recoat windows for adhesion.

RAL 9011 defines the color target only; sheen/texture are not specified by the RAL code. Acceptance often hinges on matching gloss and texture:

• Strict match to existing parts: Match the observed gloss and any texture. If uncertain, supply a part for matching and/or request a sample panel for sign-off.
• Small, low-criticality touch-ups: Choose the closest sheen; minor differences may be acceptable when the repair is small and functional.
• Cross-material coordination: Select the sheen used on the receiving surface; some variation is typically tolerated.

Typical 60 degrees gloss ranges: Flat <=10, Matte 10-20, Satin 20-35, Semi-Gloss 35-70, Gloss >=70. Dark blacks appear lighter as sheen decreases; mismatched sheen is a common cause of rejection even when color is correct.

If sheen cannot be determined, define acceptance criteria in writing (e.g., against a provided sample) before ordering.
