A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 37038 reads as a very dark, low-chroma gray with a near-black appearance and only a slight cool cast. Its low lightness means it tends to look dense rather than bright, with minimal visible color movement.
MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this government color reference is useful for equipment panels, enclosures, brackets, support hardware, railings, switch covers, speaker grilles, racks, and other small parts that need a dark specification match. It is also a practical choice for touch-up work on fabricated components, prototype parts, and maintenance items where the goal is to keep the finish visually aligned with the reference code.
Because this is a very dark color, surface prep, texture, and sheen have a noticeable effect on the final result. Dark coatings can show sanding marks, edge wear, and film-build differences more readily, and coverage over a lighter or uneven substrate may take additional coats for an even appearance. When matching an existing in-service part, the standard reference and the aged coating can still read differently because weathering and gloss change the look of the finish.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 37038 is a color reference target. If you order from MyPerfectColor, you are getting a custom-matched paint made to a match of US Government Fed Std 595C 37038, not an official government-issued coating system.
The code does not by itself choose the chemistry, gloss, surface preparation, corrosion protection, application method, or acceptance status for your job. Those details still need to be selected based on the project requirement.
Not always. Even if the code is correct, an older in-service coating can look different because of weathering, fade, sheen change, texture, film build, or differences in the original coating system.
For touch-up next to an aged finish, Fed Std 595C 37038 may be close enough for the specification, but a sample panel or a match to the existing part can be the better choice when the repair is acceptance-critical or highly visible.
The Fed Std 595C 37038 code is the color reference only. The SDS, product data, and any chemistry-specific documents apply to the MyPerfectColor product you choose for that reference.
If you need documentation for a procurement package, maintenance record, or project file, review the selected paint product documents separately from the color standard. Color match and coating-system documentation are not the same thing.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 37038 can be ordered as MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in spray paint and other formats where offered for specification-driven color work.
Depending on the product line available for this color, you may also be able to order touch-up paint, paint pens, brush-in-cap bottles, or other formats. Choose the format that fits the part size, repair method, and application process for your project.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 37038 is commonly used for government, military, fabrication, restoration, and product development work where a defined color reference is needed for equipment parts, panels, enclosures, brackets, housings, mock-ups, or training aids.
If your drawing, manual, bid package, or maintenance instruction calls out this code, ordering a match of US Government Fed Std 595C 37038 helps you stay aligned to the specified reference instead of guessing by eye.
