Step 1: Select Paint Type / Application

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 37031 reads as a very dark gray with extremely low chroma, so it can appear nearly black at a glance. The color has a restrained, cool cast rather than a warm or brown undertone, which helps it stay neutral in specification-driven work. MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint is made to match this Fed Standard 595C reference, not to supply an official government coating system.

This shade is often used for spray touch-up and repainting on equipment panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, carts, vent covers, switch plates, speaker grilles, support hardware, and fabricated metal or plastic parts that need to stay aligned with a government color standard. It also works for prototypes, mock-ups, training pieces, and color-coded components where a repeatable dark gray target is needed across different parts or substrates.

Because the color is so dark, surface condition and finish can affect how it reads after application. Sanding marks, texture, edge build, and sheen differences may be more noticeable than they would be in a lighter color, and touch-up beside an aged in-service coating may not blend exactly even when the code is correct. For acceptance-sensitive or adjacent-to-existing-surface work, the standard reference may not match the look of weathered paint or a project-specific approved finish.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 37031 *

Does Fed Std 595C 37031 define the full coating system, or only the color reference?

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 37031 is a color reference target, not a complete coating specification. If you order MyPerfectColor paint matched to Fed Std 595C 37031, you are selecting the color match, but you still need to choose the right product chemistry, surface prep, gloss level, and coating system for the job.

If your project is acceptance-critical or compliance-sensitive, confirm whether the requirement is only for the color reference or whether a specific approved coating system is also required.

Will Fed Std 595C 37031 match an older part that has already been in service?

Not always. Even if the color code is correct, an older coating can look different because of weathering, fade, sheen change, texture, or differences in the original paint system. A MyPerfectColor match to Fed Std 595C 37031 is best when the reference color itself is the target, not necessarily an aged neighboring finish.

For touch-up next to an existing surface, it is often better to compare against the actual part or a sample panel if appearance match is critical.

How can the finish affect how Fed Std 595C 37031 looks after I apply it?

Gloss, matte, satin, surface texture, and film build can all change how Fed Std 595C 37031 reads after application. The same color formula can look different depending on the final finish and the substrate underneath it.

If the project depends on a specific visual result, make sure the product format and finish you choose match the intended use, not just the color code.

What should I know about dry time and recoat timing for Fed Std 595C 37031?

Dry-to-touch, recoat time, and full cure are different milestones. The timing you should follow depends on the specific MyPerfectColor product format you order for Fed Std 595C 37031, such as spray paint or another touch-up format.

Use the instructions for the exact product on the order page and plan for handling, masking, and any second coat based on that product's directions rather than on the color code alone.

What product formats can I order for Fed Std 595C 37031 from MyPerfectColor?

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 37031 can be ordered as MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in formats that are suitable for specification-driven work, including spray paint and other touch-up options where offered. The color code is the reference target, and the product format is chosen separately based on the project.

If you need a format for a specific application method, select the product type that fits the substrate, repair size, and handling needs before placing the order.
