Step 1: Select Paint Type / Application

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36357 reads as a muted warm gray-beige with a faint yellow-green or olive undertone. It is light-to-medium in depth, low in chroma, and more subdued than a clean gray, so it tends to look understated rather than crisp.

MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint to this government color reference can be used for spray-painted touch-up and repaint work on panels, enclosures, brackets, housings, vent covers, switch plates, racks, cabinets, support hardware, and fabricated parts. It is also a practical target for prototypes, training aids, and color-coded components where the goal is to carry the specified reference across metal, plastic, or previously coated surfaces.

Because the color is relatively muted and sits in a mid-light range, coverage is usually manageable, but prep still matters: scratches, filler edges, and darker substrates can influence the final read, especially if the finish is thin or uneven. Sheen and surface texture can push it a little warmer or grayer, and if you are matching an older in-service part, the standard reference may not align with a faded or weathered coating. MyPerfectColor supplies a paint matched to the selected Fed Std 595C reference, not an official government coating system.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 36357 *

Does Fed Std 595C 36357 define the full coating system, or just the color reference?

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36357 is a color reference target. It tells you which government-standard color to match, but it does not by itself define the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion protection, or any formal approval status.

When you order from MyPerfectColor, you are selecting paint matched to the Fed Std 595C 36357 reference. If your project needs a specific coating system or acceptance requirement, that must be confirmed separately from the color code.

Will Fed Std 595C 36357 match an older in-service finish on my part?

Not always. Fed Std 595C 36357 defines the standard color target, but an older coating can look different because of fade, weathering, chemical exposure, sheen change, texture, or prior repaint work.

If you are doing a touch-up next to an aged finish, a standard-code match may be close enough for some projects, but it may not blend perfectly. For critical visible repairs, a sample panel, an existing-part match, or a full-part repaint can be the safer choice.

What documentation applies to Fed Std 595C 36357 when I order from MyPerfectColor?

The Fed Std 595C 36357 code is the color reference. The SDS and product data belong to the specific MyPerfectColor product or chemistry you choose, not to the color code itself.

If your job requires documentation for handling, application, or environmental review, use the SDS and product data for the selected paint. If your job also requires a project-specific approval or compliance decision, confirm that separately because the color code alone does not provide it.

Is Fed Std 595C 36357 enough to choose the right paint for interior or exterior service?

No. Fed Std 595C 36357 only identifies the color reference. It does not tell you whether the paint should be chosen for interior use, exterior exposure, abrasion resistance, chemical exposure, or a specific substrate.

Pick the product based on the service environment and the material you are coating, then use the Fed Std 595C 36357 reference for the color match. MyPerfectColor offers matched paint in formats such as spray paint and touch-up paint for specification-driven work.

How should I plan dry time and recoat timing for Fed Std 595C 36357?

Dry time and recoat timing are controlled by the specific MyPerfectColor product format and chemistry, not by the Fed Std 595C 36357 color reference. Dry-to-touch, recoat, and full cure are different stages, and each can take a different amount of time.

Before you start, check the instructions for the exact product you ordered and plan your work around those times. For a project where appearance or handling is important, allow the coating to cure fully before putting the part into service.
