Step 1: Select Paint Type / Application

A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37029 is a very dark gray with low chroma and a slight cool cast. In practical terms, it reads close to black at a glance, but it keeps a little more gray separation than a true black. The low LRV means it will stay visually heavy and can make sheen, texture, and substrate differences more noticeable after application.

This color is commonly useful for maintenance and fabrication parts where a government-standard reference is needed, such as panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, switch covers, rack hardware, rails, and small fabricated assemblies. MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in this color can also be used for touch-up on equipment parts, prototype components, training aids, and other specification-driven items where a consistent dark neutral is required.

Because the color is so deep, film build, finish, and the underlying surface can affect how dark it appears once sprayed. Dark coatings can also make scratches, dust, and surface prep issues easier to see, especially on glossy or smooth parts. If you are matching an existing in-service coating, keep in mind that the standard reference and the aged part may not look identical even when the code is correct.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 37029 *

What does AMS-STD-595 37029 mean, and does it define the full coating system?

A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37029 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to order, but it does not by itself define the paint chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion system, or formal approval status.

If your project requires a specific coating system or an approval process, treat the color code as only one part of the requirement. MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to the selected US Government color reference, not an official government-issued coating system.

Will AMS-STD-595 37029 match a weathered or aged existing finish exactly?

Not always. Even if AMS-STD-595 37029 is the correct code, an older in-service coating can look different because of fade, weathering, sheen change, texture, film build, or substrate differences.

If you are repairing next to an existing finish, a standard color-code match may be close enough, but it may still read differently on the repaired area. For acceptance-critical work or large visible surfaces, a match to the existing part or a sample panel may be the safer choice.

What product formats can I order for AMS-STD-595 37029?

MyPerfectColor can provide a custom-matched product for AMS-STD-595 37029 in formats such as spray paint, touch-up paint, paint pens, and other options where available.

The color code is the reference target, not a product line. If you need a specific format for parts, panels, brackets, or equipment touch-up, choose the format that fits the application method and surface size.

How should I plan dry time and recoating for AMS-STD-595 37029?

Dry time and recoat timing depend on the specific MyPerfectColor product format you order for AMS-STD-595 37029. Dry-to-touch, recoat, and full cure are different milestones, so do not plan the job from color code alone.

Use the product label or technical data for the format you selected, and allow extra time if the part will be handled, assembled, or exposed to service before full cure. For project planning, the selected product format should drive the schedule.

What kinds of projects commonly use AMS-STD-595 37029?

A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37029 is commonly used on specification-driven parts such as panels, enclosures, brackets, housings, carts, fixtures, fabricated components, prototypes, mock-ups, and training equipment.

It is a practical reference for government, military maintenance, fabrication, restoration, and product development work where a repeatable color target is needed. It is not a decor or room-color choice.
