A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 35040 is a very dark gray with a cool blue lean and very low chroma. It reads close to charcoal in practical use, with a faint blue cast rather than a warm brown or green undertone. Its low LRV means it stays visually heavy and can look deeper as sheen increases.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint is made to match the selected Fed Standard or AMS-STD-595 color reference, not an official government-issued coating system. That makes it useful when a drawing, maintenance note, procurement package, or replacement part calls for this specific standard and you need a repeatable color target.
This color is well suited to spray coating brackets, panels, equipment housings, enclosures, switch covers, railings, carts, hardware, and fabricated support parts where a dark government-standard gray is specified. It can also work for prototypes, training aids, and restoration pieces that need to visually track the reference across metal, plastic, or composite surfaces.
Because the color is so dark, surface texture, dust, and sheen differences can be more noticeable, especially on large flat parts or beside older coatings. If you are matching an in-service item, the standard reference may not look the same as a weathered or sun-exposed finish, so a project-specific sample or existing-part comparison may be warranted when the match is acceptance-sensitive.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 35040 *
What does AMS-STD-595 35040 tell me when ordering MyPerfectColor paint matched to AMS-STD-595 35040?
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 35040 is a government color reference target. It tells you the color you want MyPerfectColor to match, but it does not by itself define the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface prep, corrosion system, or any formal approval status.
If your project calls out AMS-STD-595 35040, order the MyPerfectColor product type that fits the job, then confirm the finish and quantity separately.
Will MyPerfectColor paint matched to AMS-STD-595 35040 match an older in-service coating on my part?
Not always. Even if the code is correct, an older coating can look different because of weathering, fade, sheen change, texture, or a different prior coating system.
For touch-up next to an aged finish, a standard color match may be acceptable if small differences are okay. If the repair is acceptance-critical or very visible, it may be better to match the existing part or use a sample panel before placing the order.
Why can MyPerfectColor paint matched to AMS-STD-595 35040 look different after application?
The color code sets the reference target, but the finished appearance also depends on gloss, matte or satin level, texture, and film build. Those factors can change how AMS-STD-595 35040 reads on the part after it dries.
If appearance is important, choose the finish that matches the project requirements, not just the color code.
How do I choose the right MyPerfectColor product for AMS-STD-595 35040 based on use environment?
Start with the service environment, then choose the product format that fits it. AMS-STD-595 35040 gives you the color target, but it does not tell you whether you need spray paint, touch-up paint, epoxy, urethane, or another coating type.
Match the product to the substrate and exposure conditions on your project, including interior or exterior use, abrasion, and chemical exposure, before you place the order.
What should I confirm before ordering custom MyPerfectColor paint for AMS-STD-595 35040?
Confirm the exact government color code, product type, finish, and quantity before you order. For custom-made color matches, mistakes are costly because the paint is made to your selected reference and custom color matches are not returnable or refundable.
If your project depends on AMS-STD-595 35040, review the specification carefully before checkout so you order the right match the first time.
