A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37030 reads as a very dark charcoal-gray with a near-black appearance and extremely low chroma. It has little visible color bias, so sheen, texture, and substrate condition can affect how it looks after spraying.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint for this government color standard is suited to maintenance, fabrication, and restoration work on panels, enclosures, brackets, housings, cabinets, rails, carts, fixtures, and other fabricated parts. It is also a practical choice for touch-up on accessories and support hardware where a dark, low-visibility finish is needed.
Because this is a dark color, surface prep and finish selection matter. Gloss and semi-gloss finishes can make edge build, scratches, and texture more noticeable, while flatter finishes tend to read more even. Over lighter substrates, the first coats may not look fully uniform until enough film has built up.
A Fed Std 595C or AMS-STD-595 code defines the color reference, not the coating system, approval status, or application method. For acceptance-sensitive work, the match may need to be checked against the actual part, especially if the existing coating has faded, worn, or changed sheen over time.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37030 is a government color reference target. MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to that reference so you can order a specific color for maintenance, fabrication, or prototyping work.
The code does not, by itself, define the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface prep, corrosion system, or formal approval status. If your job has compliance or acceptance requirements, confirm those separately before ordering.
Not always. Weathering, fade, sheen change, texture, and prior repaint history can make an older coating look different from the standard reference for AMS-STD-595 37030.
If you are repairing beside an existing finish, a correct standard match can still read differently on the part. For a critical touch-up, compare against the actual existing surface or use a sample panel if the project process allows it.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37030 is commonly used when a drawing, manual, procurement package, or build spec calls for a government color standard on equipment parts, panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, carts, fixtures, or other fabricated components.
It is also a practical choice for prototypes, mock-ups, training aids, and color-coding work where the goal is to stay aligned with a specified government reference rather than guess visually.
For the best repeatability, reorder by the exact code, the same product type, and the same finish. That helps keep your new order aligned with the original AMS-STD-595 37030 target.
Even with the same reference, substrate, film build, and application method can change the final appearance. If several parts must match each other, keep the process as consistent as possible across the job.
Dry-to-touch, recoat time, and full cure are different stages. The timing depends on the specific product format you order for AMS-STD-595 37030 and on conditions such as temperature, humidity, film thickness, and substrate.
Plan the job around the instructions for the exact product you buy, not just the color code. If your project has a strict schedule, make sure the chosen format fits your handling and recoat needs before you start.
