A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 23538 reads as a bright warm orange-gold with a strong yellow undertone and very high chroma. It is vivid rather than muted, with enough lightness to stay clear but enough depth to avoid looking pastel.
MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this government color reference can be used on specification-driven parts such as panels, equipment housings, enclosures, brackets, switch covers, carts, rack components, and hardware that need a repeatable visual target. It is also practical for mock-ups, training aids, fabricated assemblies, and maintenance touch-up where the goal is to keep parts aligned to the selected AMS-STD-595 code.
Because this is a strong, saturated color, coverage can be more sensitive to the base coat and to surface condition. Over dark or uneven substrates, it may take additional coats to even out the finish, and sheen or texture can change how intense it appears after application. This is MyPerfectColor paint matched to the selected reference, not an official government-issued coating system, and for acceptance-critical work a sample panel or match to the actual part may be more useful than the code alone.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
AMS-STD-595 23538 identifies the color reference target, not the full coating system. When you order MyPerfectColor paint matched to US Government AMS-STD-595 23538, you are choosing a paint made to match that government color standard. You still need to choose the right chemistry, gloss, primer, surface prep, and application method for the job.
If your project is specification-driven, use the code as the color target and confirm any separate project or procurement requirements before ordering.
Not always. A correct match to AMS-STD-595 23538 can still look different next to an existing part that has faded, weathered, changed sheen, or has a different texture or film build. Prior coatings can also shift the way the color reads after application.
If you are repairing beside an aged finish, a standard color match may be enough for some jobs, but acceptance-critical work may need a sample panel, an existing-part match, or a full-part repaint instead of a spot repair.
Dry-to-touch, recoat time, and full cure are different milestones, and the schedule depends on the MyPerfectColor format you order. A spray paint, touch-up paint, or other format can have different handling and recoat windows even when the color match is the same.
Use the product instructions for the exact format you buy and plan your project around the stated dry and cure times rather than the color code alone.
For AMS-STD-595 23538, start with a clean, dry, grease-free surface. Remove loose rust, oxidation, dust, and contamination, then scuff sound existing coatings so the new paint has a proper mechanical bond. If the substrate or corrosion risk calls for it, use the correct primer for that surface.
When you are painting over an existing finish or mixed substrates, test a small area on the actual part first. That helps confirm adhesion, compatibility, and appearance before you coat the full project.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 23538 is commonly used for specification-driven work such as equipment parts, panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, color-coded hardware, maintenance items, prototypes, and mock-ups. It is a practical reference when a drawing, manual, bid package, or maintenance requirement calls out a government color standard.
For these jobs, MyPerfectColor paint matched to US Government AMS-STD-595 23538 gives you a repeatable color target for fabrication, restoration, or repair work.
